David’s words in today’s guiding verse are not from a place of comfort but from a place of struggle. Throughout Psalm 27, he speaks about enemies, threats, and people who wanted to see him fall. Life was not unfolding the way he would have chosen. As he looked back, however, on that tough season, he saw something important. There were moments when he could easily have given up. Discouragement had come close enough to touch him. Fear had whispered its arguments. One conviction kept pulling him forward, though: he believed that he would see the goodness of the Lord.

Most of us can relate to that battle. Occasionally we start out with confidence and then we grow tired as time passes. We pray for a breakthrough, and the situation is no different.

There is an African saying that, after war, cowards eventually go back home while heroes pay the ultimate price. Are there times when being a weakling is preferable to being bold? That is the gist of our key verse.

If you were about to leave your house and then realised a storm was coming, would you proceed or abort your mission? If you were walking in the open and suddenly a heavy storm began to pour, would you look for a shelter or continue walking in the pounding rain?

These are rhetorical questions, you say. However, how often do we contradict this principle in our lives? In Proverbs 27:12, Solomon observes that wise people see danger and hide while fools face the hazard head-on and get punished.

The ox knows its master, the donkey its owner’s manager, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand

Isaiah 1:3 (NIV)

I spent some years working among nomadic pastoralists and learnt a vital lesson. Every evening, when the village herdsmen brought back goats and sheep from the pasture, each animal would return to its respective home. No animal forgot where it came from.

That is why I find God’s message through Isaiah familiar. From the onset, God makes it clear that unlike the ox and the donkey, who know their owner’s homes, Israelites have lost the way. They are not familiar with their Creator.

Some commentators assert that the ox and the donkey are considered to be of lower intelligence among domestic animals. This makes the comparison more graphic and powerful. How can a human being be less intelligent than the most ‘stupid’ animals?

Jeremiah stretches the comparison further by using wild birds.

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for He has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)

Numerous studies have established that financial issues are at the core of many family problems and breakups. Blood relatives often fight over money. Christian congregations disintegrate owing to financial mismanagement. Government projects collapse following embezzlement of funds. We simply cannot ignore the role of money in our lives.

Jesus’ teachings are full of direct references and allusions to money, indicating that it is a significant matter in a Christian’s life. How we acquire money and how we spend it matters to God. Just like with any other endowment, we will one day account for how we used our monetary possessions.

However, scripture cautions against the love of money. The idea that money can usurp the place of God in your life is frowned upon by Heaven.
