What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Romans 8:31 (NKJV)

We often feel helpless and alone when faced with life's obstacles. Paul's question in Romans 8:31 provides much consolation and assurance. When we genuinely understand that God is for us, we are able to tackle difficulties head-on because we know that He is our source of strength and love.

If God is for us…

Consider the apostle Paul, who endured a lot of suffering, including imprisonment and persecution. Despite this, he writes this passage with assurance, grounded in the reality of God's steadfast dedication to His people. God's favor surpasses any difficulties that may come our way, not that we won't encounter opposition.

Think for a moment about the things in your life that are currently overwhelming you. Is it anything personal, something in your relationship, or maybe a choice you have to make?

“I, the LORD, will hasten it in its time.”

Isaiah 60:22 (NKJV)

No one in the village envied Hannah. She was barren. Some attributed her predicament to a supposed secret sin. Perhaps she was suffering because of evil committed by her parents; others might have concluded.

It is likely that Hannah was a pariah in the marketplace. Even when she mingled with other women, she was the subject of gossip. How could she be childless at her age? Of what value was she to her husband and society?

As if that was not enough, Hannah had a co-wife who rejoiced in irritating the barren woman. Peninah did not give Hannah peace. At the slightest opportunity, she reminded Hannah that she was not woman enough.

If the two co-wives lived today, Penina would accuse Hannah of procuring abortions to deny Elkanah children.

The lazy man does not roast what he took in hunting, but diligence is man’s precious possession.
Proverbs 12:27 (NKJV)

A hunter walks for many hours over rough terrain, watching quietly, waiting patiently for the right moment to catch his prey. After all that effort, however, he does nothing with the kill. He does not prepare food, and the hard work goes to waste. What should have become useful and nourishing is neglected simply because the hunter fails to finish what he started.

When Effort Goes to Waste

Today’s guiding verse illustrates that laziness is not always obvious at the beginning. People can start with energy, determination, or even success but lose sight of the goal before finishing. The hunter in Proverbs catches the animal but stops at that. Solomon contrasts this with diligence, reminding us that wise people treasure what they have been given and handle it carefully.

Such is often life.

Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth.
Psalms 127:4 (NKJV)

During one of my most challenging experiences, I felt frustrated because God had severally ‘sabotaged’ a project I was eager to accomplish. God kept pulling me back every time I came close to my dream.

Like Arrows in the Hand of a Warrior

Months later, as I prepared for a family life seminar, I came across a verse that gave me clues on my frustration. In Proverbs 127:4, Solomon writes, “Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth.” (Psalms 127:4).

Why does God compare children with arrows? Because parents must pull their children back before launching them towards the target. When parents instruct, guide, reprimand and inflict pain on their children, the young ones feel like their parents hate them.

Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening, let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well.
Ecclesiastes 11:6 (NKJV)

The Bible is the manual for human life. It is not just a religious book. It contains instructions on many aspects of life. Today, let us focus on what the Bible teaches about investing, an issue that concerns most of us.

The author of Ecclesiastes applies the analogy of planting to teach us about investments. We are urged to plant both in the morning and in the evening. In most societies, planting happens during the day and not in the evening, which is reserved for resting.

However, we are reminded that when we plant seeds, we cannot be sure of which ones will germinate and yield a fruitful harvest, which ones will fail, or whether all will thrive. There are risks involved in farming; hence, the need for a Plan B.
