When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the LORD nor the work which He had done for Israel.
Judges 2:10 (NKJV)

Have you ever heard someone talking about something that is dear to them but not so much to you? They may tell you how God helped them through a difficult season, answered a prayer, or opened a door they never expected to open. You can appreciate the story, but you were not there when it happened to them. Something similar happened in Israel. One generation had seen God's great works and served Him. Then that generation passed away, and another generation came along that did not know the LORD or what He had done for Israel.

More Than Stories About God

The setting makes the statement even more striking. Today’s key text says the people served the LORD during Joshua's lifetime and during the lifetime of the elders who outlived him.

“Let none of you think evil in your heart against your neighbour; and do not love a false oath. For all these are things that I hate,” says the LORD.
Zechariah 8:17 (NKJV)

Have you ever left an argument but kept having the same argument in your head? The conversation ended hours ago, yet you replay what the other person said. You think of the response you wish you had given and feel the anger rising all over again. Nothing is happening outwardly, but something is happening inside. Each time you revisit the offence, you give it a little more room in your heart. Eventually, the incident may be over, but the resentment remains. That is how something we could have released begins to take root.

The Sin We Hide in Our Hearts

God's instruction through Zechariah goes deeper than our outward behaviour. He tells His people not to think evil against their neighbours and not to love falsehood. Notice where He starts: the heart.
