*Who was St. Charbel?*

St. Charbel: The Hermit Whose Miracles Still Stun the World. The life, death and miracles of St. Charbel

Since converting to Catholicism, one of my favorite things has been discovering the lives of the many saints who have gone before us. I love walking into a new church and learning about its patron or founders. I love reading inspiring quotes from the saints. And I especially love hearing about miracles attributed to their intercession.

But among all these stories, few have astonished me like that of St. Charbel Makhlouf, the 19th-century Maronite monk whose life, death, and legacy continue to echo across continents.

A Life of Radical Holiness
Born in 1828 in Lebanon, Charbel showed a deep attraction to prayer and solitude from a young age. After becoming a priest at 31, he spent 16 years serving his community before entering the austere life of a hermit monk.

“He wore a hair shirt, slept on a straw mattress with a plank for a pillow, and for his one meal of the day was content to eat the meagre left-overs from the monastery,. He displayed a remarkable devotion to the Eucharist, spending hours in preparation for saying Mass and hours in thanksgiving afterwards.” — The Maronite Monk by Jim Dunning

Charbel died in 1898 at the age of 70, after suffering a stroke while celebrating Mass. What followed after his death, however, is what continues to baffle skeptics and captivate believers.

*Miracles Beyond the Grave*

In the 45 days following his death, a mysterious bright light surrounded his tomb, witnessed by local villagers and monks alike. Pilgrims and monks began to gather and pray at his grave, reflecting on the life of the man who had served them with humility and holiness.

“They could see that he must have endured fatigue, hunger, poverty and cold with the courage of a martyr. The local villagers, many of whom had received communion over the years at his hands, recalled his holiness, his continuous prayer and hard work, his meekness and his prudent silence.” — The Maronite Monk by Jim Dunning

Four months later, his body was exhumed and found to be perfectly preserved, despite harsh weather and heavy rains. Even more remarkably, a fluid resembling a mix of sweat and blood was seen oozing from his body, a phenomenon that continued for decades. His incorrupt body remained intact until 1927, nearly three decades after his death.

Reflecting on this, I was reminded of the words of St. Paul:

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” — Romans 6:23

Death and decay were never part of God’s original plan. Sin brought death, along with aging, sickness, and corruption. In this light, the miraculous preservation of St. Charbel’s body seems like a glimpse of what holiness can do, a life unstained by sin bearing witness even in death. And St Charbel’s miracles haven’t stopped.

*The Continuing Intercession of a Saint.*

The Catholic Church has officially recognized dozens of miracles attributed to St. Charbel’s intercession, with some reports suggesting over 33,000 cases of healings and interventions from around the world.

*Here are just a few remarkable examples:*

*Sister Mary Abel Kamari (1950):* After 14 years of incurable intestinal illness, Sister Mary was declared a hopeless case by doctors. Following a night of prayer at St. Charbel’s grave, she was instantaneously healed — a recovery described as “a supernatural happening beyond man’s power to explain.”

*Iskandar Naim Obeid (1950):* A blacksmith blinded in one eye for 13 years due to retinal damage, Obeid dreamt of a monk who promised healing. The next morning, his vision was fully restored.

*Mariam Awad (1967):* Suffering from advanced throat cancer and severe respiratory distress, Mariam was instantly cured after a pilgrimage to Charbel’s tomb. She was able to eat, breathe, and speak without pain immediately after the visit.

*Nohad El Shami (1993):* After a stroke left her paralyzed on her left side, Nohad reported a dream in which St. Charbel performed surgery on her neck. Upon waking, she found two fresh wounds and complete healing.

*Dafne Gutierrez (2016):* A 30-year-old mother from Phoenix, Arizona, Dafne was declared legally blind. After receiving a blessing with St. Charbel’s relic at a local Maronite Catholic church, her sight was fully restored.

What’s most striking is how this Lebanese hermit monk, unknown to many outside the Maronite tradition, continues to transform lives across languages, nations, and cultures. These stories raise deep questions: How do we explain incorruptibility? How do we account for spontaneous healings in response to intercessory prayer?

*A Life That Still Speaks*

St. Charbel’s story is more than just an intriguing Catholic legend. It’s a living testimony to the power of a life surrendered to God. His witness invites us to rediscover the richness of Catholic spirituality, especially the doctrine of the Communion of Saints and the Church’s teaching on the intercession of the saints.

Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, the ongoing miracles attributed to St. Charbel’s prayers deserve a second look. For Catholics, he is a powerful example of sanctity, one who shows what it means to be fully alive in Christ, even in silence and hiddenness.

And if St. Charbel’s life teaches us anything, it’s that holiness is not a relic of the past. It’s alive, radiant, and waiting for those who seek it.
