LIMITLESS FORGIVENESS

MATTHEW 18: 21-35
'Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?'

Matthew 18:33
✓ Peter thought he was being very generous by offering to forgive his brother seven times in one day, but Jesus said he should forgive him 490 times in one day.
✓ It would be impossible to have someone sin against you 490 times in one day. Jesus is actually saying that there should be no limit to our forgiveness.

✓ When we are offended or hurt, we often feel justified in holding a grudge.
✓ The Old Testament law expressed this when it stated, 'Eye for eye, tooth for tooth' (Ex. 21:23-25).
✓ Until the offense was paid, we did not feel free to forgive.
✓ However, God dealt with all men's offenses by placing sin upon the perfect Savior who was judged in place of every sinner of all time.
✓ To demand that others now earn our forgiveness is not Christ like.
✓ Jesus died for every man's sins, extending forgiveness to us while we were yet sinners, and we should do the same.

✓ The main thrust of this parable is that when we have people who wrong us, we should remember the great mercy that God has shown to us and respond in kind. ✓ Any debt that could be owed to us is insignificant compared to the debt we were forgiven.
✓ We should have compassion on others as Christ had on us.
✓ If God expects us to forgive our brother who has trespassed against us 490 times in one day (actually an unlimited number of times), certainly He who is love will do no less with us.

✓ The forgiveness that we have received from the Lord is infinitely greater than any forgiveness we could ever be asked to extend toward others.

DISCIPLINE BRINGS LIFE

MATTHEW 18:15-19
✓ Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
✓ Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.'

Matthew 18:18-19
✓ Verses 18 and 19 have many applications, but taken in context, they are specifically referring to church discipline. ✓ Some might think that church discipline is only symbolic and carries no real weight; however, Jesus is making it clear that in the spiritual realm, discipline that is directed by the Holy Spirit has much power.

✓ The scriptural commands concerning church discipline are designed to help restore the brother or sister who is in sin just as much as they are designed to protect other members of the body from that sin.
✓ If the person being disciplined repents, the objective has been achieved and no further action should be taken. Church discipline is two-fold.
✓ It consists of withdrawing both our fellowship and our intercession.

✓ Proper intercession can actually keep Satan 'at bay' though an individual is living in great sin.
✓ This is good if the person uses this freedom to repent and come back to God. ✓ But, if the person takes this freedom from the wages of sin to commit more sin, there comes a time when this form of intercession ceases to be beneficial.
✓ In that case, intercession against Satan's attacks should be withdrawn, and we should actually retain that person's sins unto him so that he can no longer get by without experiencing the death that sin brings (Rom. 6:23).

✓ As he starts reaping what he has sown, it, hopefully, will cause him to turn back to the goodness of God that he once enjoyed.
✓ This is the binding and loosing being referred to in this verse.
✓ Heaven and earth are affected by our binding and loosing.

HUMILITY BEFORE HONOR
MATTHEW 18:1-5; MARK 9:30-37; LUKE 9:46-48
✓ 'Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.'

Matthew 18:4
✓ It is interesting that Jesus used a little child to illustrate humility.
✓ Although it is true that little children have a purity and humility that is many times missing in adults, they certainly are not selfless.
✓ A child comes into the world totally self-centered, wanting what he wants when he wants it.
✓ Parents are to train children out of this self-centeredness.

✓ One of humility's dominant characteristics is a God-dependency and not a self-sufficiency.
✓ The truth of humility being the key to greatness or success was not new.
✓ Jesus gave this truth new meaning by walking in humility as no one ever had before.

✓ This path of self-denial to greatness is exactly opposite to the world's path of exalting self at everyone else's expense. ✓The path of humility could not possibly work if there was no God. We would simply be trampled underfoot.

✓ Humility is a step of faith - faith that God is the judge and that promotion comes from Him (Ps. 75:6-7), and faith that God will resist the proud but give grace unto the humble (1 Pet. 5:5). Humility is trusting in God and not in ourselves.

✓ This is why it is easy to be humble when we've failed, and conversely, hard to be humble when we've achieved great success.
✓ This is precisely why Paul commanded Timothy not to put a novice into a position of leadership in the church.
✓ Pride is self-sufficiency and self-exaltation while humility is self-denial and dependence upon God.

✓ God's kingdom is founded upon this principle of humility before honor.
✓ God's kind of love is selfless as can be seen by Jesus' own actions.
✓ Pride is the only reason that strife comes (Prov. 13:10); so remember, humility is the key to walking in love with our brothers and sisters in the Lord.

Hebrews 8:1-4
[1] Now this is the crowning point of what we are saying: We have a magnificent King-Priest who ministers for us at the right hand of God. He is enthroned with honor next to the throne of the Majesty on high.

[2] He serves in the holy sanctuary in the true heavenly tabernacle set up by God, and not by men.

[3] Since every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, so the Messiah also had to bring some sacrifice.

[4] But since he didn’t qualify to be an earthly priest, and there are already priests who offer sacrifices prescribed by the law, he offered in heaven a perfect sacrifice.

✓ Jesus is our high priest, a month of communion in His life.

LOVERS OF GOD HAVE A DIVINE PORTION

Psalms 16:1-11
[1] Keep me safe, O mighty God. I run to you, my safe place.

[2] I said to Yahweh, “You are my Maker and my Master. Any good thing you find in me has come from you.”

[3] And he said to me, “My holy lovers in the land are my glorious ones, who fulfill all my desires.”

[4] Yet there are those who yield to their weakness, and they will have troubles unending. I never gather with such ones, nor give them honor in any way.

[5] Yahweh, you alone are my inheritance. You are my prize, my pleasure, and my portion. You hold my destiny and its timing in your hands.

[6] Your pleasant path leads me to pleasant places. I’m overwhelmed by the privileges that come with following you!

[7] The way you counsel me makes me praise you more, for your whispers in the night give me wisdom, showing me what to do next.

[8] Because I set you, Yahweh, always close to me, my confidence will never be weakened, for I experience your wraparound presence every moment.

[9] My heart and soul explode with joy—full of glory! Even my body will rest confident and secure.

WORD POWER

MATTHEW 14:29
'And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.'

MATTHEW 14:29
~This one word 'come' was spoken by the one who made all things (Jn. 1:3) and it had just as much power in it as the words that were spoken at creation.
~This is where the power came from for Peter to walk on the water.
~Likewise, any word spoken to us by God carries in itself the anointing and power it takes to fulfill that word, if we will release it by believing it and acting on it.

~We need to not only know God's power, but the greatness of God's power, and then the exceeding greatness of God's power.
~This exceeding greatness of God's power is towards us.
~That means that it is for us and our benefit.
~Some people get glimpses of God's power, but very few have the revelation that it is for us and at our disposal.
~It doesn't do us any good to believe that God has power if we don't believe that it will work for us.
~This great power of God is effectual only for those who believe. We must believe to receive, or if we doubt, we do without.

~Despite all the criticism that might be leveled at Peter in this instance, he did walk on the water.
~There were eleven other disciples in the boat and although they clearly saw Jesus and Peter walking on the water, they still did not participate.
~One of the important steps in receiving a miracle from God is to leave the security of your natural resources (get out of your boat) and put yourself in the position where there has to be a miracle from God to hold you up. God is no respecter of persons (Rom. 2:11).
~Any of the disciples could have walked on the water, if they would have asked and gotten out of the boat.

OPPOSITION TO THE GOSPEL

MATTHEW 10:34-42
~Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to

send peace, but a sword.'
MATTHEW 10:34
~This statement seems like a contradiction to some prophecies concerning Jesus and some of Jesus' own statements concerning peace, as well as what was written of Him in the New Testament Epistles.
~However, the peace that Jesus purchased was peace between God and man.
~We have peace with God (Rom. 5:1). We are exhorted to take this peace and extend it to all men, but it is also made very clear that not all men will receive it.

~Peace can only come when we relate to God on the basis of faith in what He did for us, instead of what we do for Him.
~A person who is thinking that he must perform up to some standard to be accepted by God will have no peace.
~That puts the burden of salvation on our shoulders, and we can't bear that load.
~We were incapable of living holy enough to please God before we were saved, and we are incapable of living holy enough to please God now that we are saved (Heb. 11:6).
~We were saved by faith, and we have to continue to walk with God by faith (Col. 2:6).
~Not understanding this has made many Christians, who love God, unable to enjoy the peace that was provided for them through faith in Jesus.

~The Gospel will always produce opposition from those who don't receive it.
~This 'sword of division,' even among family members, is not God's will, nor is it God that causes it.
~But, it will inevitably come, and Jesus was simply preparing His disciples for that time.
~As much as we would like everyone to receive the good news, we must not think it is strange when even our loved ones don't receive it.
~Jesus was rejected by His own, and we will be also. We must remain faithful to continue preaching the Gospel, for there are others who will receive. Keep sharing the 'Good News!'

GODLY SORROW LEADS TO REPENTANCE

~MARK 6:7-12
'And they went out, and preached that men should repent.'



Mark 6:12
~'Repent' comes from the Greek word, 'metanoeo,' and literally means to have another mind.
~Repentance is a necessary part of salvation.
~Repentance may include Godly sorrow, but sorrow does not always include repentance.

~Repentance is simply a change of mind accompanied by corresponding actions. ~There is a Godly type of sorrow and an ungodly type of sorrow.
~Godly sorrow leads to repentance. Ungodly sorrow, or the sorrow of this world, just kills.

~Our culture has rejected all 'negative' emotions.
~But God gave us the capacity for these negative emotions, and there is a proper use of them. Ecclesiastes 7:3 says, '~Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.' People should feel bad about sin.
~There should be sorrow over our failures. However, this sorrow should lead to repentance.
~Then, when forgiveness is received, our sorrow should be cast upon the Lord (Isa. 53:4).

~The Lord's statements to His disciples, the night before His crucifixion, caused them sorrow (Mt. 26:21-22; Jn. 16:6).
~If they would have let that sorrow lead them to repentance, then they wouldn't have denied the Lord.
~Peter's sorrow after his denial of Jesus changed him and, certainly, he never regretted the tears he cried.

~The sorrow experienced by those who do not turn to God produces only death. ~They grieve over their situation because they don't turn to God (that's repentance). Christians should only have sorrow until they repent.
~Once repentance has come, we need to appropriate the forgiveness and cleansing that are already ours through Christ.
~Godly sorrow that produces repentance leaves us with no regrets.
~The positive change that our sorrows led us to, changes our attitude towards the things that caused us sorrow.
~Let the negatives in your life become positives through Jesus.
