The Commission for Inter-Religious Dialogue and Ecumenism-Malindi Catholic Diocese

On 23rd July 2026, CIRDE participated in a Community Dialogue Forum held at Mere Social Hall, where stakeholders from across Kilifi County came together to strengthen peace efforts ahead of the 2027 General Election. The forum, organized by Peace Brigade International (PBI) through its local partners—Kwacha Africa (KA), Hope for Women (HFM), and Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI)—brought together community leaders, religious leaders, women, elders, youth, civil society organizations, faith-based organizations, security agencies, and national government administrators.

Participants were called upon to actively play their role in promoting peace, preventing conflict, encouraging issue-based and peaceful political campaigns, and fostering unity within their communities.

The meeting also resolved to expand peace awareness through community platforms and develop a community social contract/manifesto to be signed by political leaders as a commitment to peaceful elections.

As CIRDE, we remain committed to partnering with all stakeholders to promote dialogue, harmony, shared values, and collaboration in building peaceful and resilient communities.

CIRDE Malindi staff member, Richard Mutinda, participated in a one-week intensive Interfaith Training Course and Dialogue of Life held at Mariapolis Piero, Juja, on 14-19th June 2026 . The training was organized by The Focolare Movement in collaboration with Risalat International Institute, Iran. More than 70 participants from different parts of the world attended, including respected scholars and practitioners in the field of interfaith dialogue. The participants shared their experiences, challenges, and the journeys they have taken in promoting unity, peace, and mutual understanding among people of different faiths.

The training provided a valuable opportunity for learning, reflection, and building relationships across religious and cultural boundaries. Through presentations, discussions, and personal encounters, participants gained deeper insights into the importance of dialogue and peaceful coexistence. CIRDE Malindi expresses its sincere gratitude to The Focolare Movement and Risalat International Institute for organizing this enriching program and creating a platform that strengthens the spirit of unity, friendship, and interreligious cooperation.

The CIRDE Malindi team, along with the Safeguarding Officer from the Catholic Diocese of Malindi, visited Langobaya Catholic School, "St. Mary Help of Christians," on June 10, 2026. The visit included a kickoff meeting with the school's head teacher, Sister Hellen, to discuss the establishment of a new Peace Club for the junior secondary students. This club will be supported by the school management and CIRDE, following the positive and successful example of our previous experience with the Tarasaa Peace Club at "St. Michael Catholic School." After touring the school and visiting several classes, the team also had the opportunity to meet with the sisters' community. We are grateful for the warm welcome and look forward to this new collaboration!

On 1st June 2026, CIRDE Malindi joined Caritas Malindi, with support from AMECEA, in a tree-planting exercise at Stella Maris Pastoral Centre, Watamu. The activity brought together Watamu Parish congregants and leaders, led by Rev. Fr. Dominic Odhiambo, alongside CJPD Malindi, the Education and Safeguarding Departments, led by Simon Mwalimo and George Otieno, respectively, and Johaness Mzee from Caritas Malindi.

Inspired by Pope Francis' Laudato Si' call to care for our common home, participants planted trees as a sign of commitment to environmental conservation, climate action, and environmental peacebuilding for present and future generations.

The Commission for Inter-Religious Dialogue and Ecumenism (CIRDE) in Malindi hosted students and lecturers from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) and the Centre for Religion, Conflict, and Peacebuilding (CRCP) during an educational exchange visit from May 22nd to 23rd, 2026. The visit aimed to help students understand how interreligious engagement promotes peace and addresses conflicts within communities.

The program began with remarks from Rt. Rev. Bishop Wilybard Lagho of the Catholic Diocese of Malindi, who encouraged students to become peace ambassadors in society. He challenged them to learn, share knowledge, and develop innovative solutions for local conflicts, particularly those based on resource disputes that affect many communities today.

The CIRDE team shared practical examples of how religious leaders and various stakeholders work together to promote interreligious peace, unity, and social cohesion. Through discussions and a question-and-answer session, students gained insights into the local dynamics of conflict and peace, learning how faith-based approaches can aid in conflict resolution and reconciliation.

The students also interacted with Elder Munyaya Charo, an African Traditional Religious leader, and Sheikh Khalfan from the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK). Both leaders emphasized the role of religion in fostering peace and understanding.

On the second day, the group visited the Mekatilili wa Menza Rescue and Cultural Centre, deepening their understanding of individuals who have experienced violence and trauma, especially elderly persons affected by harmful cultural beliefs. This visit allowed students to appreciate the efforts made by faith leaders and community organizations to protect vulnerable populations and strengthen interreligious dialogue and peaceful coexistence.

CIRDE Malindi is grateful to have participated in a two-day training on “Strengthening Interfaith and Ecumenical Dialogue for Peaceful Coexistence in the Pre-Election Period,” held on May 13th–14th, 2026, at the Tudor Pastoral Centre in Mombasa. The workshop was organized by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) – CIRDE and supported by Uraia Trust through the Danish Embassy.

This workshop brought together religious leaders, both young and old, from across Mombasa County to reflect on the crucial role faith leaders play in promoting peace as Kenya prepares for the 2027 elections. Participants learned about conflict prevention, hate speech mitigation, civic education, mediation, and early warning strategies for fostering peaceful coexistence and their divine role in the promotion of peace.

The training was honored by the presence of Archbishops Martin Kivuva and Dominic Kimengich from the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa, who encouraged religious leaders to be champions of peace, unity, and justice in society. Archbishop Martin Kivuva stated, “Peace begins with each one of us choosing dialogue over division.”

CIRDE Malindi successfully held a three-day planning workshop (28th–30th April 2026) at Turtle Bay Beach Resort, Watamu, bringing together 17 participants. These included CIRDE implementation team members and selected direct partners, such as youth representatives, clergy, and Peace Club teacher. The AGIAMONDO National Coordination Team from Nairobi facilitated the workshop.
During the meeting, participants reviewed the Malindi Catholic Diocese conflict/context analysis, reflected on proposed interventions, and agreed on the key issues to address over the next three years. At the end of the three-day workshop, we developed a shared project vision and mission and identified the direct partners with whom CIRDE will collaborate to implement the proposed activities.

CIRDE hosted Muslim leaders and other participants for an Iftar dinner at the Pastoral Center Malindi on 19th March 2026 to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadhan.

In his remarks, Rev. Fr. Alex Kimbi, representing Bishop Willybard Lagho (Catholic Bishop of Malindi), noted the importance of celebrating our diversity. He emphasized that such moments help to build respect, understanding, and unity among different faiths, especially after sharing a joint period of Ramadhan and Lent.

Sheikh Athman Said, expressed sincere appreciation for the kind gesture by the Catholic Church. He thanked CIRDE for creating a space where people of different religions can come together in peace, friendship, and mutual respect.

Participants enjoyed a shared meal and refreshments, strengthening bonds and promoting harmony within the community.

CIRDE participated in a one-day training on strengthening community–security coordination held in Kilifi on 9 March 2026. The training was convened by the National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC) and brought together key peace and security actors, including County Engagement Forum stakeholders from Kilifi County.

The meeting provided an important platform to understand the new National Strategy on Countering Violent Extremism (NSCVE 2025–2030). It emphasized the need for strong stakeholder engagement to build synergy among government institutions, faith-based organizations, and community actors working to prevent violent extremism.

During the training, participants also mapped out violent extremism (VE) hotspots, developed a peace map, and identified existing gaps in addressing VE issues in Kilifi County. These discussions helped strengthen coordination and shared understanding among stakeholders on how to respond more effectively at the community level. CIRDE’s participation reaffirmed the important role of interfaith actors in countering violent extremism.

Through its peacebuilding trainings, especially to the youths, community dialogue initiatives, and active use of social media, CIRDE continues to promote tolerance, debunk myths and stereotypes, and amplify positive messages of peace. By empowering communities and nurturing Peacebuilding Ambassadors, CIRDE contributes to building resilient and peaceful communities.
