We usually read the Parable of the Wedding Feast and think it is about invitation.

About grace.
About how wide the call of God is.

And the text is clear.
The invitation is wide.

A king prepares a wedding feast for his son.
Everything is ready.
Everything is complete.

But when the invited guests are summoned, they refuse (Matt. 22:3–5).

This is not ignorance.
It is rejection.

So the king expands the invitation:

“𝐆𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝” (Matt. 22:9).

And the hall is filled.

People from the margins.
People from the streets.
“Both bad and good” sit at the table (v.10).

This is grace breaking boundaries.

But then the parable shifts.

The king enters.
And the focus narrows to one man.

One man without a wedding garment (v.11).

The garment is not decoration.
It is required preparation.

In the ancient context of royal banquets, especially wedding feasts, it was customary for the host/king to provide appropriate garments for guests.

So the issue is not poverty.
Not status.
Not access.

It is refusal.

The man is not simply unprepared.
He is unclothed in what was offered.

That is why he is speechless (v.12).

Because he is not judged for entering the feast…
but for rejecting the king’s provision while inside it.

The wedding garment represents accepted righteousness.

Not self-produced standing before God.
But divinely provided covering.

Within the flow of the parable:

Invitation = call of grace
Gathering = inclusion in the visible community
Garment = acceptance of the King’s provision for final standing

And this is the decisive question:

Was the King’s provision received… or refused?

This is not a new theme.

In Genesis 3, after sin, Adam and Eve attempt self-covering:

They sew fig leaves.

This is humanity’s first act of self-righteousness.
Covering shame through human effort.

But God does not accept it.

He replaces it with a covering He provides (Gen. 3:21).

Human-made covering

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, for He will never leave you nor forsake you. He is faithful, and His mercy endures forever. To those enduring trials, remember this: God sees you, He is with you, and He is fighting for you. Though the battle may be fierce, victory belongs to the Lord. Stand firm in your faith, for He who promised is faithful.

Hold on, for your deliverance is near, and your praise will resound as a testament to His glory.

In John 11:39 Jesus asked people to
“Take away the stone.” that was blocking the entrance of Lazurus tomb…
Jesus could raise Lazarus, but He would not roll the stone away.
God often asks us to move what we placed there emotionally.
Resurrection power flows after human obedience.
Remember the entrance to the tomb was also its exit and the only barrier was the stone blocking it.

Hear me, the blockage and the barrier to you blooming could be the one you put there yourself.. and only you would willingly take it away and allow the Lord to bring you back to life in abundance.

The first step to growth, breaking that cycle, changing that behavior, healing from trauma and addiction…is you rolling the stone away and expose whatever rotting inside you and Christ will bring it back to life.

Don’t worry about the smell, Jesus Christ isn’t intimidated by it. Just come as you are.
