Caritas, the Latin word for love, comprises all the charitable, social and development activities that the Church is doing for the people in Turkana. The Diocese of Lodwar, which recently celebrated 50 years of Catholic presence in the land of Turkana, has been instrumental in providing pastoral and spiritual support to the people. Her efforts in setting up the basic development structures and ser
vices to the communities for the past 50+ years in Turkana County are remarkable:
The Diocese of Lodwar has played a critical role in filling gaps in state service provision by bringing humanitarian interventions to vulnerable groups and providing sustainable development. The Diocese has been for many years almost the sole actor in development initiatives providing water, education and health basic infrastructures in the whole of Turkana. Empowerment of women, Human Rights and vulnerable groups, fighting for Justice and building Peace have been at the heart of our engagement since the 1960s. While seeking to operate within the wider framework of Caritas Internationalis and maintaining very close links with Caritas Kenya, the Diocese has presented a new Strategic Plan for 2015-2019 under the new structure of Caritas. The Strategic Plan for Caritas Lodwar is based on the principles of the social teaching of the Church and especially the principle of the common good, the principle of solidarity and the dignity and equality of all mankind.
