Benedictine Monks, Tigoni Abbey The Official Page of the Prince of Peace Benedictine Abbey Tigoni, KENYA. Motto: PACIS NON ERIT FINIS The missionary Benedictines of St.

Ottilien is a congregation of religious houses within the Benedictine confederation, founded by Fr. Andrew Amrhein, a monk of Beuron Abbey in the year 1884. The aim of the Benedictine Missionaries of St. Ottilien is to combine the Benedictine way of life with activity in the mission field. Benedictines are contemplative and active. The Benedictine missionary tradition found a new impetus in Fr. An

dreas as is popularly known, who founded the Missionary Institute of St. Joseph in Reichenbach Bavaria, on the feast of the Epiphany, 1884. This establishment was the first of its kind in Germany and experienced great difficulties because of anti-clerical atitudes, which were prevalent at that time. in 1887, this growing community moved to Emming-St. Ottilien where it continued to prosper. in 1896, the new monastery became a priory, and later an Abbey in 1902 and an archAbbey in 1914. The work of the Benedictines of St. Ottilien Spread to Africa and Asia as early as 1887, when pope Leo XII entrusted the Benedictines with the Apostolic prefecture of South Zanzibar, in what was then German East Africa, presently Tanzania. The Missionary Monks undertook work in Kenya among the semi-nomadic people of the kerio valley, in Kenya in 1972. In 1978, they established a formation house in Nanyuki. In 1982, they built a house at Ruaraka Thika road, which later developed into a parish serving the christian faithful living in Mathare. In 1986, they moved to Limuru-Tigoni, where they built a major Monastery, and as the headquarters of the Benedictines in Kenya. The Benedictines are more hospitable and their famous slogan is "Prayer and Work" (Ora Et Labora). Monks from Europe and Africa pray and work together in the same Priory.

With quiet joy and deep gratitude, we thank all who joined us at our Abbey for the first and solemn monastic procession of vows. Your prayerful presence accompanied our brothers as they offered their lives to God in stability, obedience, and conversatio morum.

We commend you to the mercy of God and ask that you continue to remember our monastic community and the newly professed in your prayers.

This Evening, We Enter Advent — A Season of Holy Longing.

As the gentle silence of this evening settles around us, the mother Church begins the Advent season. It is more than a season on the calendar — it is a tender invitation from God to open our hearts again.

Tonight’s evening prayer reminds us that we are a people who wait with hope, even when life feels heavy… a people who believe that light will return, even after the longest nights.

Advent whispers to our souls:
“Slow down. Breathe. Let Me come into your life again.”

This season stirs something deep within us — a longing for peace, for healing, for joy, for God’s gentle nearness. It teaches us that every tear, every prayer, every quiet desire of the heart is seen by the One who loves us beyond measure.

As we light the first candle, may its flame remind you that no darkness is too deep for God’s light to enter.
May hope be reborn in you.
May your heart find rest.
May Christ draw closer to you than ever before.

🕯️ Blessed and grace-filled Advent to each one of you.
Let us journey together, with open hearts and renewed faith.

INVITATION: MONASTIC VOWS 2026
The meaning of posting this invitation 50 days ahead of the D-Day (10/01/2026) in relation to 50 days of Pentecost carry deep biblical and theological symbolism that unites both the Old and New Testaments.
They symbolize:
1. Fulfilment of the Old Covenant in the New
2. Fullness and completion
3. New beginning (jubilee)
4. Birth of the Church
5. Empowerment for mission
6. Passage from Law to Spirit
We humbly ask you for your prayers as our Brothers continue to prepare for their commitments.

What most absorbs your time, your attention, and your heart? In the parable of the rich man who refused to help the beggar named Lazarus Jesus paints a dramatic scene of contrasts - riches and poverty, heaven and hell, compassion and indifference, inclusion and exclusion. We also see an abrupt and dramatic reversal of fortune. Lazarus was not only poor and a beggar, he was also sick and unable to fend for himself. He was "laid" at the gates of the rich man's house. The dogs which licked his sores probably also stole the little bread he got for himself. Dogs in the ancient world symbolized contempt. Enduring the torment of these savage dogs only added to the poor man's miseries and sufferings.

The rich man treated the beggar with contempt and indifference, until he found his fortunes reversed at the end of his life!
