Saint of the Day. 5th February 2026
Saint Agatha.
Born in Sicily during the third century, Saint Agatha was a young woman of noble birth who consecrated her life and purity to Christ at a young age. Her steadfast devotion faced a severe trial during the persecutions of Emperor Decius around 250 AD, when a high-ranking Roman official named Quintianus sought to marry her for her beauty and wealth. After she rejected his advances and reaffirmed her faith, Quintianus subjected her to a month-long imprisonment in a brothel, hoping to break her virtue.
When Agatha remained unmoved, she was subjected to brutal tortures, most notably the excision of her breasts with pincers. Despite being left in prison without medical care, she was miraculously comforted and healed by a vision of Saint Peter the Apostle. Enraged by her recovery, Quintianus ordered her to be rolled over hot coals and broken shards. During this final ordeal, a massive earthquake struck Catania, leading the townspeople to demand an end to her suffering; Agatha was returned to prison, where she died in 251 AD while offering a prayer of gratitude.
Due to her mutilation and miraculous healing, she is the patron saint of those suffering from Breast Cancer and other breast related illnesses.
Saint Agatha, Pray for us.
