REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK

Mothering Sunday is celebrated in the Anglican Church on the fourth Sunday in Lent. Historically, it was a day when Christians returned to their “mother church”—the church where they were baptized or first nurtured in the faith. Over time, it also became a day to honor our earthly mothers and those who have cared for us with love and sacrifice.

The tradition began in England, when domestic servants were given time off to visit their families and attend church with their mothers. Many would bring small gifts such as flowers, eggs, or cakes as a token of love and gratitude.

Mothering Sunday reminds us of three important things:
1. Gratitude for Our Mothers
Mothers are a gift from God. Through their love, care, prayers, and sacrifices, they nurture life and shape our character.

2. The Church as Our Spiritual Mother
The Church nurtures believers through teaching, fellowship, and the sacraments. It is here that we grow spiritually and are strengthened in our faith.

3. Our Call to Nurture Others
Just as mothers nurture children, Christians are called to show compassion, care, and encouragement to others in our communities.

As we celebrate Mothering Sunday, let us give thanks to God for our mothers, honor those who have nurtured us in faith, and commit ourselves to showing love and care to others.

Happy Mothering Sunday! May God bless all mothers and those who lovingly care for others.
Shalom!
