Mercy lingers! Woe!

Before Babylon destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC, Judah had already turned from God in worship.

The Sabbath had been profaned.
Sun worship was being practiced in the temple courts.
God’s authority had been set aside for false worship.

Ezekiel saw men standing between the porch and the altar, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, worshipping the sun toward the east. — Ezekiel 8:16

Jeremiah had also warned that continued Sabbath desecration would bring destruction upon Jerusalem. — Jeremiah 17:27

The final crisis will again be a crisis over worship and authority.

God has sanctified the seventh-day Sabbath. Yet prophecy points to a final conflict in which human authority will attempt to exalt another day in its place.

The issue is not merely Saturday versus Sunday.

It is this:

Who has the authority to determine what is holy — God, or man?

Ancient Jerusalem rejected God’s holy day and embraced false worship before desolation came.

The final abomination of desolation will bring the same fundamental issue to the whole world.

God’s Sabbath rejected.
Sunday exalted in its place.
A final test of worship, obedience, and authority.
