Intuitive guide to simple linear regression

I am sure regression is not a new term to you. But, can you intuitively explain it to non-technical personnel (your task as data/ business analyst), show your work procedure in the world's widely used software, Ms. Excel?

Whether you are an expert in Statistics, or a student of data and business analytics, this guide is for you. Happy reading!

Intuitive Guide to Correlation in R.

I love basics, I love details. In this session we are going introduce correlation, how to calculate correlation coefficient in R, how to calculate correlation coefficient for multiple pairs in R, how to test the correlation significance for a single pair, how to test correlation significance for multiple pairs, test the assumptions of correlation test, interpret the correlation significance using p-value, t-value and confidence level. We intuitively explain what we mean by "correlation does not imply causal". We explore the application of correlation. It is a complete note on correlation in R that I recommend and dedicate to you all.

You will have R file and data dictionary attached.

Statistical Deceptions

Statistics play very important role in decision making. However, it has to be implemented by well defined objectives, right sampling techniques, scientific collection of data, appropriate assumption, right transformation, analysis and interpretation techniques, and clear communication for action. Scarcity in any of this, leads to wrong conclusion, poor decision and hence business losses.

Lets consider television advertisements. Many of the numbers about in this way do not represent careful statistical analysis. They can be misleading and push you into decisions that you might find cause to regret.

Examples;

Example 1: A new advertisement for J&J supermarket in early November last year result in 45% increase in household sales for the following month. Thus, the advertisement was effective.
A major flaw is that sales in household items generally increases in the month of November and December regardless of the advertisements. This is called a history effect and leads people to interpreted outcomes as a result of one variable when another variable (in this case, time) is actually responsible.

Example 2: The more churches in the city, the more crime there is. Thus, churches lead to crime.
A major flaw is that both increased churches and increased crime rates can be explained by larger populations. In bigger cities, there are both more churches and more crime. This is called third variable effect where a variable cause both situation. However, people erroneously interprate that there is a causal relationship between two primary variables rather than recognize the third variable that can cause both.

Example 3: 75% more interethnic marriages are occurring this year than 15 years ago in Kenya. Thus, our society accepts interethnic marriages.
A major flaw is that we don’t have the information that we need. What is the rate at which marriages are occurring? Suppose only 1% of marriages 15 years were interethnic and so now 1.75% (1.75 is 75% more than 1). But this latter number is hardly evidence suggesting the acceptability of interethnic marriages. In addition, the statistics does not provide fluctuations over the years, so this might not be the highest interethnic marriage.

NB: Statistics is a process. So, make sure you are on the right track throughout the process.
Defined clear objectives (context literature review, conduct capture mission, stakeholder analysis, and key problem analysis), right sampling techniques, scientific collection of data, appropriate assumption, right transformation, analysis and interpretation techniques, and clear communication for action.

Power BI for Business Intelligence Analyst

Executive Summary
Would you like to create meaningful evaluations from large amount of available data that show you interactively certain development such as sales, production figures, financial data or other data?
Perhaps you would like to know which product or sales area is growing faster or slower than others, or how your products are developing in specific countries or what innovative power your company has (e.g., how large is the sales share of product that have not been in market for long).
Data analysis often entails pulling extensive amount of information from a wide variety of data sources which requires preparation. This is exactly where Power BI comes in. It will help you in preparing and analyzing data sources including data sets and models or relationship between tables, meaningful visualization of data, filters and slicers in addition to bookmarks.

What is Power BI
Power BI is a standalone Microsoft business intelligence product, which include both desktop and web-based application for loading, modeling, analyzing and visualizing data.
BI in Power BI stands for business intelligence (BI). Business intelligence is the art of extracting meaningful information from data. BI technologies can handle large amounts of structured and unstructured data to identify, develop and otherwise create new strategic business opportunities.

Why Power BI
i. Access to various databases as sources for data – business data is often as Excel spreadsheet but as databases. When it comes to evaluation, databases do not provide the tools you need to analyze the data. The database programs themselves often generate only list-based reports optimized for printing. Power BI can establish connection to various data sources regardless of where they are located on your local PC, on a file server of your company, or in the cloud (cloud service providers are like AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google cloud, Oracle cloud, IBM cloud etc.)
ii. Build relational models to blend data from multiple sources – business data are often in different tables and databases. Power BI enable users to create table relationships to analyze holistic performance across entire data models.
iii. Define complex calculation using Data Analysis Expression (DAX) – this enhances datasets and enable advanced analytics with powerful portable expressions
iv. Visualize data with interactive reports and dashboards – build custom business intelligence tools with best-in-class visualization and dashboard features.
v. In-demand industry leader.

Where to apply
i) Gauge effectiveness of business decisions
ii) Explore “what-if” scenarios
iii) Build customized visuals

11/03/2023

Statistical analysis is collecting, organizing, and interpreting data meaningfully. Business statistics offers data to managers who help them to make successful decisions based on fundamental values rather than intuitions. Statistics is used to analyze the data and make interpretations, whether for sales estimation, introducing a new product line, making new production strategies, etc.

The primary purpose of business statistics is data collection, allowing managers to evaluate past performance, forecast future business practices, and run the organization profitably. Furthermore, it becomes the basis for risk navigation, sales prediction, market trends, changing consumer behavior, price determination, etc.

For businesses that envision gaining a competitive edge, data is the right tool they should invest in. The main reason behind the success of any big firm is its emphasis on data and research.

For example- Amazon recommends their customers based on their past orders and buying behavior. They use machine learning and data analytics to drive their recommendation engines rather than blindly suggesting [products to customers.

Similarly, Starbucks uses an analytical approach to identify its future store locations. They partner with a location analytics company to find ideal store locations. They continuously use data to make informed decisions about finding new customers, acquiring customer insights, targeting marketing campaigns, spotting fraud, identifying other business risks, etc.

A business can benefit in myriad ways when they utilize accurate data. Let’s find out how.

1. Making more Confident Decisions.
With the collection and analysis of data, you can make any business decision confidently as it is based on specific patterns and trends evaluated. No matter whether it is related to the launch of a new product or its discontinuation, entering into a new market, and so on.

2. Continual Organizational Growth
Once you implement a strategy that was made using data, the next step you use is to check its outcomes. Businesses can apply their decisions to many functions, operations, and departmental activities. One after another, when they keep on implementing strategies will empower them to set actionable benchmarks that will result in continual growth and progress.

3. Hunting New Business Opportunities
With statistical analysis, businesses can have access to more opportunities. The timely evaluation of market trends and customer demands will enable them to gain insights before their rivals. Hence, with correct quantities of data, they can identify business opportunities and gain an edge over their rivals.
