Did you know there was ๐ฎ ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ผ ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ป๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฑ in the Bible? Yes, he ran so fast he left his clothes behind. It sounds crazy, but in the chaos of Gethsemaneโafter the kiss of betrayal and the slashing of an earโMark records a strikingly odd detail: a young man was following Jesus, clothed only in a long linen shirt.
When the mob tried to grab him, he didnโt stay to fight. He slipped out of his shirt and ran away naked (๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ ๐ญ๐ฐ:๐ฑ๐ญโ๐ฑ๐ฎ).
The event looks awkward and almost funny, but it carries a powerful lesson for us today: it was a humiliating moment indeed, but if weโre honest, we have to admit that we are no better than that young man.
Weโre brave until it costs us something. Weโre "all in" until the pressure hitsโreal pressure, public pressure, and painful pressure. And when it does, we donโt always stand. We run. We run from our faith and convictions, we run from serving the Lord, and we run from our Christian family and we end up "naked"โstripped of our image, our strength, and our pride.
Two things stand out from this story:

The story vividly illustrates the total abandonment Jesus faced. Jesus faced the cross alone. While the disciples had promised never to desert Him, this young man's flight shows that even those who try to follow closely eventually give in to fear. We often mirror this by making big promises to God when life is easy, only to see our loyalty evaporate the moment a crisis hits. We realize too late that our own willpower is insufficient to keep us standing when the world starts "grabbing" at us.

In first-century Jewish culture, public nakedness was deeply humiliating. The young man chose the extreme shame of fleeing naked rather than being arrested with Jesus. Similarly, we often choose self-preservation over commitment, preferring to hide our faith or blend into the crowd rather than face the social "arrest" of being labeled a devoted Christian. Like this man, we prioritize our temporary reputation over our eternal identity in Christ.

The young manโs flight highlights the isolation of the cross. While everyone elseโeven the most devotedโeventually reached their limit and ran to save themselves, Jesus stayed. He faced the cross alone. He didn't flee from the mob, the shame, or the coming pain. Instead, He stood His ground in Gethsemane so He could stand in our place on Calvary. He allowed Himself to be stripped and shamed so that He could cover our failures with His grace. In the end, the story isn't about our ability to stand, but about the fact that Jesus stood His ground for us when no one else would.
