Masomo ya Misa 20/11/2022

Somo la Kwanza
2 Sam 5:1-3
Ndipo kabila zote za Israeli wakamwendea Daudi huko Hebroni, wakasema naye, wakinena, Tazama, sisi tu mfupa wako na nyama yako. Zamani za kale, hapo Sauli alipokuwa mfalme juu yetu, wewe ndiwe uliyewaongoza Israeli watoke nje, na kuingia ndani. Naye Bwana akakuambia, Wewe utawalisha watu wangu Israeli, nawe utakuwa mkuu juu ya Israeli. Basi wazee wote wa Israeli wakamwendea mfalme huko Hebroni, naye mfalme Daudi akapatana nao huko Hebroni mbele za Bwana; wakamtia Daudi mafuta awe mfalme juu ya Israeli.

Wimbo wa Katikati
Zab 122:1-5
Nalifurahi waliponiambia,
Na twende nyumbani kwa Bwana.
Miguu yetu imesimama Ndani ya malango yako, Ee Yerusalemu.
(K)Nalifurahi waliponiambia, na twende nyumbani kwa Bwana.

Ee Yerusalemu uliyejengwa
K**a mji ulioshik**ana,
Huko ndiko walikopanda kabila, Kabila za Bwana;

Aleluya

Somo la Injili
Lk 23:35-43
Watu walisimama wakitazama. Wale wakuu nao walikuwa wakimfanyia mzaha, wakisema, Aliokoa wengine; na ajiokoe mwenyewe, k**a ndiye Kristo wa Mungu, mteule wake. Wale askari nao wakamfanyia dhihaka, wakimwendea na kumletea s**i, huku wakisema, K**a wewe ndiwe mfalme wa Wayahudi, ujiokoe mwenyewe. Yesu akamwambia, Amin, nakuambia, leo hivi utakuwa pamoja nami peponi.

First reading
Genesis 19:15-29
The destruction of S***m and Gomorrah

The angels urged Lot, ‘Come, take your wife and these two daughters of yours, or you will be overwhelmed in the punishment of the town.’ And as he hesitated, the men took him by the hand, and his wife and his two daughters, because of the pity the Lord felt for him. They led him out and left him outside the town.
As they were leading him out he said, ‘Run for your life. Neither look behind you nor stop anywhere on the plain. Make for the hills if you would not be overwhelmed.’ ‘No, I beg you, my lord,’ Lot said to them ‘your servant has won your favour and you have shown great kindness to me in saving my life. But I could not reach the hills before this calamity overtook me, and death with it. The town over there is near enough to flee to, and is a little one. Let me make for that – is it not little? – and my life will be saved.’ He answered, ‘I grant you this favour too, and will not destroy the town you speak of. Hurry, escape to it, for I can do nothing until you reach it.’ That is why the town is named Zoar.
As the sun rose over the land and Lot entered Zoar, the Lord rained on S***m and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord. He overthrew these towns and the whole plain, with all the inhabitants of the towns, and everything that grew there. But the wife of Lot looked back, and was turned into a pillar of salt.
Rising early in the morning Abraham went to the place where he had stood before the Lord, and looking towards S***m and Gomorrah, and across all the plain, he saw the smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.
Thus it was that when God destroyed the towns of the plain, he kept Abraham in mind and rescued Lot out of disaster when he overwhelmed the towns where Lot lived.

Matthew 8:23-27
Jesus rebuked the winds and the seas, and all was calm

Jesus got into the boat followed by his disciples. Without warning a storm broke over the lake, so violent that the waves were breaking right over the boat. But he was asleep. So they went to him and woke him saying, ‘Save us, Lord, we are going down!’ And he said to them, ‘Why are you so frightened, you men of little faith?’ And with that he stood up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and all was calm again. The men were astounded and said, ‘Whatever kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him.’

RIDING THE STORMS WITH JESUS!

Imagine you were out on the sea with Jesus and the Apostles. You were a fisherman and spent countless hours on the sea throughout your life. Some days the sea was exceptionally calm and other days there were big waves. But this day was unique. These waves were huge and crashing and you feared that things would not end well. Would you wake Jesus from His sleep? Would we brave the storm without waking Him up?

Jesus rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. If this story means just calming the sea then one may question: why does not Jesus allow the seas to be calm, without rough waves? Why does he allow his loved ones to be drowned in the stormy sea of life?

There is much more to this story than just calming the storm. Wherever Jesus is, there is calmness, serenity and peace. No matter how terrible the storms of life are, the very presence of Jesus turns even the worst situation into a great calm. With Jesus in our life no boat nor string wind can drown us. But the problem with us is that we are people of little faith. Our faith is very shallow, and when things do not happen as per our plans, we begin to doubt the very presence of God. Only those who are convinced and have experienced the indwelling and abiding presence of God remain strong and unshaken. Such people experience peace and serenity in all circumstances, even in the most terrible of tempests of life.

Jesus, in His great compassion, is waiting for us to turn to Him in our fear and to seek His help. When we do, He will be there as a parent is there for a child who wakes during the night in fear. But ideally we will face the storm with confidence and hope. We will ideally know that this too will pass and that we should simply trust and stay strong. This seems to be the most ideal lesson we can learn from this story.

Reflect, today, on how you react to hardship and problems in your life. Be they big or small, do you face them with the confidence, calm and hope that Jesus wants you to have? Life is too short to be filled with terror. Have confidence in the Lord no matter what you face each day. If He seems to be asleep, allow Him to remain asleep. He knows what He is doing and you can be certain that He will never allow you to endure more than you can handle.

Prayer: Lord, whatever may come my way I trust You. I know You are always there and will never give me more than I can handle. Increase and deepen my faith in Your indwelling presence, that I may experience a great calm and peace always. Jesus, I do trust in You. Amen.

Tuesday 28 May 2019
Tuesday of the 6th week of Eastertide

________

First reading
Acts 16:22-34
Become a believer and you will be saved, and your household too.

The crowd joined in and showed their hostility to Paul and Silas, so the magistrates had them stripped and ordered them to be flogged. They were given many lashes and then thrown into prison, and the gaoler was told to keep a close watch on them. So, following his instructions, he threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
Late that night Paul and Silas were praying and singing God’s praises, while the other prisoners listened. Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison to its foundations. All the doors flew open and the chains fell from all the prisoners. When the gaoler woke and saw the doors wide open he drew his sword and was about to commit su***de, presuming that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, ‘Don’t do yourself any harm; we are all here.’ The gaoler called for lights, then rushed in, threw himself trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas, and escorted them out, saying, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ They told him, ‘Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, and your household too.’ Then they preached the word of the Lord to him and to all his family. Late as it was, he took them to wash their wounds, and was baptised then and there with all his household. Afterwards he took them home and gave them a meal, and the whole family celebrated their conversion to belief in God.

John 16:5-11
Unless I go, the Advocate will not come to you

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘Now I am going to the one who sent me.
Not one of you has asked, “Where are you going?”
Yet you are sad at heart because I have told you this.
Still, I must tell you the truth:
it is for your own good that I am going
because unless I go,
the Advocate will not come to you;
but if I do go,
I will send him to you.
And when he comes,
he will show the world how wrong it was,
about sin,
and about who was in the right,
and about judgement:
about sin: proved by their refusal to believe in me;
about who was in the right: proved by my going to the Father and your seeing me no more;
about judgement: proved by the prince of this world being already condemned.’

Easter Reflections

TUESDAY, SIXTH WEEK OF EASTER

Reading 1: Acts 16: 22-34 The Philippians turn against Paul and Silas and imprison them, but they are miraculously rescued, and their jailer is converted.

Res. Psalm: Ps 138: 1-3, 7-8 You stretch out your hand and save me, O Lord

Gospel: Jn 16: 5-11 Jesus tries to comfort the apostles by promising to send the Holy Spirit.
------------------------------------------------

LIFE IN THE SPIRIT

The response of the psalm describes exactly what God did for Paul, for Paul’s jailer, for those baptized last Easter, and for each and every one of us who are Christian. It is God, and he alone, who saves. Paul’s jailer, having witnessed the extraordinary events of Paul’s deliverance, asks: “Men, what must I do to be saved?” It is a typical question for most human beings, including many Catholics, who ought to know better. Everyone seems to think that religion and salvation consists in our doing things for God in order to win his favor. Paul says simply: “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, and all your household.”

Paul is seen filled with the power of the Holy Spirit praising and thanking God for giving him and his companions a share in the suffering of Christ. This is the true grace of the Holy Spirit working in them, teaching them to do the right things at the right moment. Therefore when the prison doors were opened they did not escape. This witness of theirs leads to the conversion of the jailor and his family. They are instructed by the Holy Spirit to save the life of the jailor, the one who was the cause of their suffering. In the Gospel, the hearts of the Apostles were filled with grief, but they were also trying to trust what Jesus said to them. Jesus told them He was ascending to His Father and that it was better for them that He go. For if He goes, He will send the Holy Spirit to them.

On a human level, it would have been quite hard for the Apostles to let go of their daily interactions with Jesus. They certainly missed seeing Him with their eyes, touching Him and hearing Him. But Jesus made it clear that even though He was leaving He would be with them always. And He would also send the Holy Spirit upon them to lead them, give them courage, and teach them all truth. They would now be His presence in the world by the power of the Holy Spirit.

As we near the Solemnity of Pentecost, humbly admit to yourself if you need to let the Holy Spirit become more alive in your life. Trust that Jesus wants you to receive Him in His fullness. And be not afraid to let this union take place. We need to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit who is in us and who tries to lead us on the path of truth.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to inflame Your presence in my life. Amen.

Monday of the Fifth Week of Easter

Reading 1
Acts 14:5-18

There was an attempt in Iconium by both the Gentiles and the Jews, together with their leaders, to attack and stone Paul and Barnabas. They realized it, and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding countryside, where they continued to proclaim the Good News.

At Lystra there was a crippled man, lame from birth, who had never walked. He listened to Paul speaking, who looked intently at him, saw that he had the faith to be healed,
and called out in a loud voice, "Stand up straight on your feet."
He jumped up and began to walk about. When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they cried out in Lycaonian, "The gods have come down to us in human form."
They called Barnabas "Zeus" and Paul "Hermes," because he was the chief speaker.
And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, for he together with the people intended to offer sacrifice.

The Apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their garments when they heard this and rushed out into the crowd, shouting,
"Men, why are you doing this?
We are of the same nature as you, human beings.
We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from these idols to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them.
In past generations he allowed all Gentiles to go their own ways; yet, in bestowing his goodness, he did not leave himself without witness, for he gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, and filled you with nourishment and gladness for your hearts." Even with these words, they scarcely restrained the crowds from offering sacrifice to them.

Gospel
John 14:21-26

Jesus said to his disciples: "Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him." Judas, not the Iscariot, said to him, "Master, then what happened that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the world?"
Jesus answered and said to him, "Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.
Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me.

"I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you."

Readings at Mass: May 16, 2019
(Thursday of the 4th week of Eastertide)

First Reading: Acts 13:13-25
God has raised up one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour. Paul and his friends went by sea from Paphos to Perga in Pamphylia where John left them to go back to Jerusalem. The others carried on from Perga till they reached Antioch in Pisidia. Here they went to synagogue on the sabbath and took their seats. After the lessons from the Law and the Prophets had been read, the presidents of the synagogue sent them a message: ‘Brothers, if you would like to address some words of encouragement to the congregation, please do so.’ Paul stood up, held up a hand for silence and began to speak:
‘Men of Israel, and fearers of God, listen! The God of our nation Israel chose our ancestors, and made our people great when they were living as foreigners in Egypt; then by divine power he led them out, and for about forty years took care of them in the wilderness. When he had destroyed seven nations in Canaan, he put them in possession of their land for about four hundred and fifty years. After this he gave them judges, down to the prophet Samuel. Then they demanded a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin. After forty years, he deposed him and made David their king, of whom he approved in these words, “I have selected David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will carry out my whole purpose.” To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David’s descendants, Jesus, as Saviour, whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the whole people of Israel. Before John ended his career he said, “I am not the one you imagine me to be; that one is coming after me and I am not fit to undo his sandal.”’

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 88(89):2-3,21,22,25,27
I will sing forever of your love, O Lord.
or
Alleluia!
I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord; through all ages my mouth will proclaim your truth.
Of this I am sure, that your love lasts forever, that your truth is firmly established as the heavens.
I will sing forever of your love, O Lord.
or
Alleluia!
I have found David my servant and with my holy oil anointed him.
My hand shall always be with him and my arm shall make him strong.
I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord.
or
Alleluia!
My truth and my love shall be with him; by my name his might shall be exalted.
He will say to me: ‘You are my father, my God, the rock who saves me.’
I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord.
or
Alleluia!

Gospel Acclamation
cf.Rv1:5
Alleluia, alleluia!
You, O Christ, are the faithful witness,
the First-born from the dead,
you have loved us and have washed away our sins with your blood.
Alleluia!

Gospel
John 13:16-20
Whoever welcomes the one I send welcomes me. After he had washed the feet of his disciples, Jesus said to them:
‘I tell you most solemnly, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the man who sent him.
‘Now that you know this, happiness will be yours if you behave accordingly. I am not speaking about all of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must be fulfilled: Someone who shares my table rebels against me.
‘I tell you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He.
I tell you most solemnly, whoever welcomes the one I send welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.’
