The Role of Attitudes and Discrimination
Discrimination against youth with mental health challenges begins early and increases over time, causing attitudes to become ingrained.1 Despite the fact that an overwhelming majority of Americans believe that people with mental illnesses are not to blame for their conditions (84 percent), only about 57.3 percent believe that people are generally caring and sympathetic toward individuals with mental illnesses.2 This percentage is much lower (24.6 percent) for those who themselves suffer poor mental health.3

Attitudes of Young People
Discrimination and misconceptions about people with mental illnesses is prevalent for youth and young adults.4 Findings from the 2006 HealthStyles Survey suggest that, for young adults between the ages of 18 and 24,

about 24 percent believe that a person with a mental illness is dangerous and 38.9 percent believe he or she is unpredictable;
less than half (44.3 percent) believe that someone with a mental illness can be successful at work;
only slightly more than half (55.2 percent) believe that treatment can help people with mental illnesses lead normal lives; and
only around 26.9 percent believe that a person with mental illness can eventually recover.
Discrimination as a Barrier to Recovery
Discrimination associated with mental illness poses a large barrier to recovery and is one of the main reasons why people don’t seek help and treatment.5 Further, an unwillingness to seek help because of the negative attitudes attached to mental health and substance abuse disorders or to suicidal thoughts has been found to be one of the risk factors associated with suicide.6

What can be Done to Limit Discrimination?
Youth are a key population on which to focus discrimination reduction efforts, as they are more likely than the general public to know someone with a mental illness, and therefore have a unique opportunity to make a difference.7 The National Annenberg Survey of Youth conducted a large scale study on these negative attitudes and found that youth who were informed with facts and able to dispel myths about individuals with mental health disorders were less likely to discriminate against them. They concluded that various approaches have promise in decreasing negative attitudes and discrimination, such as the use of mass media to influence the attitudes of youth and educating students by incorporating persons with mental health disorders as speakers in classroom presentations and discussions.8

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has launched an anti-discrimination campaign called What a Difference a Friend Makes. The premise of the campaign is that recovery from mental illness is more likely in a society that is accepting, and that provides education and support from friends. Through acceptance and social inclusion, individuals who have behavioral health challenges or mental illness can be contributing members of their families and communities.

SAMHSA suggests everyone can do something to help a person with mental illness by

avoiding the use of negative labels;
showing kindness and respect; and
helping to eliminate discrimination in housing, employment, or education.9
In addition, understanding and accepting friends play an important role in recovery.

Friends can help by offering reassurance, companionship, and emotional strength.
Friends can express an interest and concern for people with a mental illness by asking questions, listening to ideas, and being responsive.
Friends can help encourage others to treat mental illness like any other healthcare condition.
Friends can dismiss any preconceived notions about mental illness and embrace a more helpful way of relating to people.10

MOMENT OF TRANSFORMATION DEVOTIONAL
"... Communicating His Spirit..."

Wednesday 13th May, 2020

TITLE: PRAY WITH WISDOM...
TEXT: JAMES 4:3
"Ye ASK, and RECEIVE NOT, because ye ask AMISS, that ye may consume it upon your lusts".

SPIRITUAL NUGGET:
"When you PRAY without Revelation and Understanding, your ANSWERS may bring you into a state of confusion..."

LET'S GO DEEPER:
PRAYERS is beyond just saying WORDS: PRAYER is a Spiritual Seed that planted into the Realm of the Spirit. You must understand that everytime you are making a PRAYER REQUEST, you are knocking on a Door in the Realm of the Spirit. And every DOORS has a GATE for it to be opened especially, when that request is tangible and important at a particular time. So therefore, in every GATE, there are GATE-KEEPERS, PRINCIPALITIES AND POWERS from the geographical location of the Second Heaven. And these GATE-KEEPERS are also referred to as Strong-men in the Realm of the Spirit. Anytime you are Praying, as you KNOCK IN THE GATE OF THAT REQUEST, those PRINCIPALITIES (GATE-KEEPERS) will hold your PRAYERS CAPTIVE especially when it is not backed up with the Power of the Holy Spirit, "... For no MAN CAN SAY (PRAY) THAT JESUS CHRIST IS LORD, BUT BY THE HOLY GHOST..." (1 Cor.12:3).

In other words, if a Believer is PRAYING OR MAKING REQUEST IN THE FLESH without personal revelation and relationship with God, such GATES will never be opened. Yes! Until, He PRAYS in the Spirit, from the Bowels of Faith and Revelation. This also means that, any PRAYERS done without FAITH, REVELATION (BACKING OF SCRIPTURES) AND THE BACKING OF THE SPIRIT (PRAYING IN THE HOLY GHOST) will become a subject of MOCKERY in the Realms of the Heaven by those Gate-Keepers (Forces). This is REAL. That is why Daniel prayers was being CONTENDED with and also MOCKED in the confines of Second Heaven for 21 solid days, until God showed him mercy and sent the Arch-angel Michael to come to his rescue (Dan. 10:1-15). This is another important reason, why Christians MUST be very careful and sensitive in the Spirit when taking a Prayer Point. You can't just go ahead and PRAY any Prayer you heard someone praying somewhere, without personal Revelation and Leading of the Spirit, because every Prayer Point is a Weapon in the Realm of the Spirit that is KNOCKING AT A DOOR. Remember, there are GATE-KEEPERS who continuously spy where the PRAYERS are coming from.

ACTION POINT:
Don't PRAY in the FLESH, learn to master praying in the Spirit with Faith in your heart and the backing of Scriptures, because Prayers are Spiritual Weapons used in climbing into the realms of the Spirit. Pray with WISDOM and through the help of the Spirit of Revelation, pray with FAITH and let your Prayers be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. May God's Spirit rest upon you in Jesus Name, Amen!

FURTHER STUDY:
Matthew 26:40-42, Acts 6:2-4, Psalm 105:4.

PRAYER:
Sweet Holy Spirit of God, I ask that You Teach me how to pray rightly. Just pray through my life in accordance to the Will of the Father in Jesus Name.

BIBLE STUDY PLAN:
Genesis 39:1-9, Mark 12:12-end.

Jesus Is The Good Shepherd

JOHN 10:11-13 NKJ 11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 "But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 "The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep.

Jesus is no hireling who might desert His sheep. If you belong to Jesus, you need never fear being without help and provision.

Jesus promised He will NEVER leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). No matter what we face in this life (or afterward), Jesus will be there with us to help us.

How can we judge whether a shepherd is good, or not?

We can only evaluate how good a shepherd is by the condition of his flock. If the flock is not in top shape, or they lack anything, it is evident the shepherd is not doing a good job.

Jesus is not just "a good shepherd." He is "THE" good shepherd. He is the very definition of what a good shepherd is. No one is better!

You may look around, even at your own life, and think that many of Jesus' sheep are in bad shape.

Yet we must understand that if we run away from Jesus and refuse to allow Him to shepherd us, it is not His fault if we are in bad shape.

When we run off and do our own thing, we should not blame Jesus if the outcome is not good.

If we do ever find ourselves in poor shape, we should question whether we are really allowing Jesus to be our Shepherd, or whether we have ignored Jesus and chose to go our own way.

So any time we find ourselves facing any trouble or need, our first reaction should be to run to our Shepherd. He is always ready, willing, and able to help us -- even to the point of giving up His life for our benefit! That is how good and dedicated our wonderful Shepherd is!

SAY THIS: I am privileged to have the best shepherd in the universe taking care of me: my Lord Jesus Christ!
