Themed "Inspired By Nature. For Climate and Our Future," the Diocesan Environment Day 2026 was hosted within Mukumu Deanery, at St. Pius X Parish Musoli, on 11-06-2026. Joined by clergy, guests across different cadres ranging from different religious sects, members of the fourth estate, corporate entities, companies advancing climate resilience, and general faithful, the Bishop of Kakamega and Apostolic Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret, His Lordship Rt. Rev. Joseph Obanyi Sagwe graced the occasion.

Calling for urgent action, common call for change of attitude towards care for our common home, the local ordinary urged all faithful to use the natural resources sustainably. "What kind of environment, earth, home, do we want to leave for our children and grandchildren?" reiterated the shepherd.

He further urged the authorities to approach the issue of gold mining with respect to law, openness, and Dignity of Human Life. He further urged the mining community to extract the resources responsibly, with care for the environment.

Activity Update: Vivamos || Bishop's Visit To The Widow's Project || 09/06/2026

On 09-06-2026, under the widows project located in Mumias East, our widows were visited by the bishop of Kakamega diocese, Rt, Rev Joseph Obanyi Sagwe. The aim was the visit was to see what the widows were being taught on the ground and how they beneffited from it. He started his visit at the Lusheya tree nursery where he saw the nursery and was taught how to make the ash brew. He proceeded to a widows farm then to another widows homestead where he shared a common meal with the widows. In the afternoon he visited another farm at Butope and another solidarity group in the area. He then proceeded to bless the Kwa Juma Muchelule spring and went back to St. Peter's Parish, Mumias. At the parish, he gifted the widows cones for kitchen gardening and apreciated the widows who donated their farms. As the Bishop was visiting these areas, there was an ongoing legal clinic at the Parish and the widows with land cases were helped with the staff from FIDA and WOPA.

CJPD Signs MoU With County Government of Vihiga

The Catholic Justice and Peace Department (CJPD) of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega has signed an MoU with the County Government of Vihiga (Department of Environment, Water, Energy, Natural Resources & Climate Change)

This partnership builds on past efforts like community tree nurseries and the reforestation of Maragoli Hills, and now expands to empower communities through agroecology, school-based tree planting, ecosystem restoration, and public sensitization on waste management.

Areas of collaboration include: Establishing and strengthening community & institutional tree nurseries, Awareness campaigns on environmental protection & sustainable resource use, Restoring the Maragoli Hills Forest, Promoting tree-growing in schools & parishes, Supporting alternative livelihoods for climate resilience, Organizing clean-up exercises, and Protecting wetlands, springs & rehabilitating former mining sites

Acting CECM Meshack Mulongo hailed the MoU as a symbol of enduring partnership for sustainable development. The ceremony was witnessed by County Secretary Vincent Chanzu and other officials. The CJPD team was led by Rev. Fr. Boniface Mmbwanga (Coordinator), joined by Rev. Fr. Shikoli Desterious Augustomay (Assistant Coordinator) and Vincent Sh*tsama (Environment Officer).
