Awareness creation on safeguarding in Mt. Elgon

The Gender Justice and Economic Empowerment Project organized a two-day safeguarding training on 25th and 26th August in Mt. Elgon Sub-County. The training brought together key stakeholders to strengthen community-based protection, safeguarding, and response mechanisms.

Participants included gender champions from Elgon, Kapkateny and Chepyuk Wards; local administration, the Directorate of Children Services and a representative from the National Gender and Equality Commission.

The training focused on practical approaches to safeguarding, including responding to GBV disclosures as a non-GBV specialist, survivor-centered approaches, understanding referral pathways, Psychological First Aid (PFA), and key guiding principles in responding to Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The training was facilitated by Joel Asiago, Safeguarding and Social Inclusion Coordinator for East and Southern Africa at World Renew

Through such capacity-building initiatives, ADS Western and its partners continue to equip community actors with the knowledge and skills needed to promote safe, inclusive and responsive communities where everyone’s dignity and rights are protected. Sharley Namasaka

Across Western Kenya, farmers are embracing agroecological practices to build resilient livelihoods, improve food security, and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Through the Improved Livelihood in Light of Climate Change Project, implemented by ADS Western in partnership with Bread for the World (BROT), communities in Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, and Vihiga counties are adopting sustainable farming practices that enhance agricultural productivity while protecting the environment.

As part of this initiative, ADS Western, in collaboration with the Mmavu Umbrella Self-Help Group, organized a Farmers' Field Day in Vihiga Sub-county under the theme "Improving the Productivity of Small-Scale Farmers Through the Adoption of Agroecological Practices."

The field day showcased practical agroecological and climate-smart farming technologies, including raised beds, Mandala gardens, _Tumbukiza_ technology, conical gardens, half-moon basins, swales, crop diversification, moisture conservation beds, cover cropping, mulching, and the cultivation of resilient crops such as cassava and sweet potatoes.

These approaches equip farmers with practical skills to improve soil health, conserve water, increase yields, and strengthen resilience to climate change.

The event was graced by Mr. Reuben Chumba, Director of Agriculture, Vihiga County.
