The Reality of False Narratives – A Lesson from Matthew 28:11–15
During this easter holiday, I wish to share with us one life lesson from the Gospel of Matthew 28:11–15 which reveals a chilling reality, how far people can go to “finance” and sustain a false narrative.
The soldiers were first-hand witnesses of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. By every indication, they knew the truth. Yet, driven by self-preservation and influenced by those in power, a false story was crafted, funded, and widely spread to suppress that truth.
What is striking is this: Jesus, at the centre of the false narrative, did not defend Himself.
The lie spread quickly across the region. It gained momentum. It was organized, financed, and endorsed. Meanwhile, the truth seemed quiet, almost overshadowed.
And this reflects a reality we often face in life.
There are moments when a false narrative can rise about who you are—especially in seasons shaped by pain, loss, or transition. Whether it is loss of a job, relationships, health, or reputation, such moments can be manipulated to paint a distorted picture of your life. Those behind such narratives often seek to protect themselves or preserve their image—just as the chief priests promised the soldiers security if the matter reached the governor.
Jesus had just endured a shameful and painful death. At what seemed like the lowest point of His life, even after rising again, a false narrative still emerged.
Yet one truth remained unshaken:
He had risen.
There were witnesses—including the very soldiers who were bribed. That reality could not be erased.
So we ask:
• Did the false narrative change the truth of the resurrection?
• Did Jesus try to counter it?
• Did His disciples launch a defense campaign?
Absolutely not.
Instead, Jesus remained focused on His mission. He revealed Himself to those who believed. He did not appear before Pilate or the chief priests to prove a point. He invested in His followers—strengthening and commissioning them.
Here lies the wisdom:
Do not be distracted by false narratives. Stay aligned with your assignment. Let God vindicate you.
It is those who believe in the truth of your life and calling who become carriers of that truth. Lies require constant reinforcement—even more lies—to survive. But truth stands on its own. It endures.
Jesus promised His followers the Holy Spirit, who would empower them to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. And today, we see the outcome:
The false narrative that once spread rapidly in Jerusalem is now confined to just a few (5) verses in Scripture.
But the risen Christ continues to transform lives, generation after generation.
Truth outlived the lie.
So if you find yourself in a season where your story is being misrepresented—take heart.
Jesus said in Gospel of John 16:33 that in this world we will face tribulation—but He has already overcome. And because He overcame, you will too.
What began as a whispered truth of resurrection has become a resounding declaration of victory across the world.
Happy Easter.
