The Muhoho Chronicles – The Gospel of Muhoho and Madam Gathenya
Muhoho High School (Manyani, Muchez or Royalz) back in the day was a whole movie when it came to matters of faith. Imagine this: most thugs were certified members of YCS, attending with unmatched devotion, you would find them at the centre of everything be it good or bad, while CU members on the other hand were so "saved" that even angels were taking notes. You couldn’t miss them—always walking and humming praises like they had God on speed dial.
During KCSE, CU legends like Aloise (2005), Samwel (2006), Moses (2007), Mburu (2008), and Thuo & Kuria Joseph (2009) would lock themselves in the Thingira (then comp lab) for intense revision sessions to avoiding any encounters with "leaking pipes" like the plague—no accidental sins here, folks. Respect! Honestly, these were the most spiritually fortified students I have ever met.
At the center of all this moral shaping and academic rigor was none other than Madam Elizabeth Wanjeri Gathenya—the woman, the myth, the Muhoho legend. Her impact on the lives of these boys? Immeasurable. She wasn’t just a teacher; she was a miracle worker. Madam shared everything she had—literally everything! Snacks, wisdom, even patience she didn’t owe anyone. She carried our burdens like they were her cross, shaping us into God-loving gentlemen (even the thugs turned choirboys). Without her, I’m convinced life at Muhoho might have gone… sideways. May she live long enough to witness the fruits of her labor and see how far her boys have come.
But here’s the bittersweet news: Madam Gathenya is retiring soon—either this year or next. I can’t wrap my head around it. A Muhoho without her feels like a kite without its string, 31yrs of changing lives at our alma mater isn't something to be taken for grantd. So, here’s my humble (and slightly persuasive) pitch: let’s give her the mother of all farewells. Picture this: 500 of us coming together to contribute gifts that represent our gratitude and memories—practical, meaningful, and straight from the heart.
Madam Gathenya deserves a send-off as legendary as her impact. Let’s make it happen. What do you say? Drop your ideas and let’s start organizing!
PS: The writer is still a pagan (some habits die hard), she once told me when we met accidentally outside the classes that being a good boy wasn't enough and that I should consider finding God, those words haunt me to date, but even pagans agree—life at Muhoho without Madam Gathenya? Unthinkable
