HOW TO SUSTAIN MARRIAGE
13/12/2025
1. Put God at the Center of the Marriage
“Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain…” — Psalm 127:1
Marriage is spiritual before it is emotional or physical
Joint prayer, Word study, and worship sustain unity
A God-centered marriage is storm-proof.
Any marriage where God is not enthroned will struggle for control.
2. Walk in Love — Not Just Feelings
“Husbands, love your wives…” — Ephesians 5:25
“Love suffers long and is kind…” — 1 Corinthians 13:4–8
Love is a decision, not a mood
Forgiveness must be quick and sincere
Love grows by sacrifice and patience
Sustained marriages are built by mature love, not excitement.
3. Understand and Respect Roles
Ephesians 5:22–25
Husband: leadership with responsibility, care, and sacrifice
Wife: support, respect, and cooperation
Disorder of roles leads to friction and exhaustion
When roles are respected, peace is preserved.
4. Communication: Speak Truth with Wisdom
“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak…” — James 1:19
Avoid silence, insults, and assumptions
Talk issues early before they become wounds
Listen to understand, not to reply.
Most marital crises are communication failures, not hatred.
5. Financial Wisdom and Agreement
“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” — Amos 3:3
Unity in finances prevents strife
Avoid secrecy and reckless spending
Practice contentment and planning
Money does not destroy marriages — lack of wisdom does.
6. Sexual Purity and Intimacy
“Marriage is honourable… and the bed undefiled.” — Hebrews 13:4
Faithfulness is non-negotiable
Sexual intimacy strengthens emotional bonding
Refuse external temptations and comparisons
Intimacy preserved is unity protected.
7. Deal with Offenses Quickly
“Do not let the sun go down on your wrath.” — Ephesians 4:26
Offense is inevitable, bitterness is optional
Refuse to keep records of wrongs
Apologize humbly, forgive genuinely
Unresolved offenses are silent killers of marriages.
8. Grow Spiritually and Personally
“But grow in grace and in the knowledge…” — 2 Peter 3:18
Marriage grows when individuals grow
Improve character, discipline, and maturity
Refuse stagnation
You don’t sustain marriage by wishing — you sustain it by growing.
9. Protect the Marriage from External Influences
“A man shall leave… and cleave to his wife.” — Genesis 2:24
Limit third-party interference
Avoid ungodly counsel
Build boundaries around the marriage
What you allow around your marriage will affect it.
10. Commit to Covenant, Not Convenience
“What God has joined together, let no man put asunder.” — Matthew 19:6
Marriage is a covenant, not a contract
Stay committed during seasons of pressure
Grace sustains what commitment protects
Strong marriages are sustained by covenant mentality.
CONCLUSION
Marriage does not collapse suddenly — it erodes gradually when these principles are ignored.
When God is honored, love is practiced, and wisdom is applied, marriage becomes a testimony, not a tragedy.
God bless you
