🚨 BREAKING: Bishop Osório Citora Afonso of the Catholic Diocese of Quelimane has died after a gunshot attack at his residence in the early hours of June 6. He was just 54 years old.

Authorities say unknown assailants entered the bishop's residence and shot him in the chest. An investigation is now underway as Church leaders call for prayers and seek answers surrounding the shocking incident.

Bishop Afonso was known for his calls for peace, unity, and solidarity with communities suffering from violence in Mozambique. Only weeks ago, he publicly condemned terrorist attacks and urged Catholics to remain united in faith.

Please join us in praying for the repose of his soul and for the Catholic faithful of Mozambique during this painful time.

While the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret is expected to receive a new bishop soon, there is also a possibility that the tide could change in a much bigger way. A surprise elevation of Eldoret to an Archdiocese cannot be entirely ruled out.

Considering the size, influence, pastoral demands, and strategic location of the Diocese of Eldoret at the heart of several neighboring dioceses, there is a strong case for it to be elevated to a Metropolitan See.

Currently, the Diocese of Eldoret is a suffragan diocese under the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kisumu. The Kisumu Ecclesiastical Province consists of eight suffragan dioceses: Eldoret, Kapsabet, Kitale, Lodwar, Kakamega, Bungoma, Kisii, and Homa Bay.

If Eldoret were elevated to a Metropolitan Archdiocese, it is possible that the current suffragan dioceses could be reorganized based on geographical considerations. In such a scenario, Eldoret could oversee Kapsabet, Kitale, and Lodwar, while Kisumu would retain Kakamega, Bungoma, Kisii, and Homa Bay. The Diocese of Nakuru and Kericho being in Nairobi Metropolitan could also feature in any future restructuring, though that would ultimately be a matter for the Holy See to determine.

What would this mean for the appointment of a new Bishop? In such a case, a serving bishop could be elevated directly to the rank of Archbishop and become the first Metropolitan Archbishop of Eldoret.

Notably, the Diocese of Eldoret has already produced two Archbishops to other Archdiocese. One was Archbishop John Njenga, who was elevated in 1990 and later served the Archdiocese of Mombasa. More recently, Bishop Dominic Kimengich was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Mombasa.

However, until the Holy See makes a formal announcement, all such discussions remain purely speculative. These are simply my personal views and observations.

“Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live?”
A reading from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel (Ezekiel 18:21-28)

Thus says the Lord God: “If a wicked man turns away from all his sins which he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness which he has done he shall live. Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, says the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity and does the same abominable things that the wicked man does, shall he live? None of the righteous deeds which he has done shall be remembered; for the treachery of which he is guilty and the sin he has committed, he shall die. Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just. ’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he shall die for it; for the iniquity which he has committed he shall die. Again, when a wicked man turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is lawful and right, he shall save his life.
