Scripture: Joshua 5:13-15; 6:1-5
As Joshua approached Jericho, he encountered a mysterious figure with a drawn sword (Joshua 5:13-15). When Joshua asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” the reply was clear: “Neither, but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” Joshua immediately fell facedown in reverence, recognizing that the battle ahead was not just a physical fight but a spiritual encounter with God Himself.
This moment highlights the significance of God’s presence and His promises:
1.God’s Promises Stand Through Generations: The Israelites had been waiting for the promised land for hundreds of years, about 700 years since God first called Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3). God’s promise was never forgotten, and now the time had come for its fulfillment.
👉Similarly, God’s promises in our lives may take time, but His timing is perfect.
2.Victory is Guided by God, Not Just Strategy: In Joshua 6:1-5, God gave Joshua a strategy for Jericho that seemed unusual..marching around the city, blowing trumpets, and waiting for God’s timing.
👉 This teaches us that obedience to God’s instructions, even when they don’t make sense to human logic, leads to victory.
3.Acknowledging God’s Authority: Joshua removed his sandals because he stood on holy ground (v.15), echoing Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:5). This reminds us that God’s presence sanctifies the space we occupy and our victories come when we honor His authority.
4.Spiritual Preparation Precedes Physical Action: Israel had just crossed the Jordan, renewed the covenant, and celebrated Passover. 👉God calls us to spiritual readiness before stepping into the battles He leads us through.
5.Obedience Brings Breakthrough: The instructions for Jericho required complete trust in God’s plan. When we follow His guidance, even against all odds, we experience His faithfulness and the fulfillment of His promises.
📌Takeaway: Like Joshua, we must recognize that God Himself is the commander of our battles (Joshua 5:14).
Our role is to submit, obey and trust in His timing. Even if a promise seems long delayed, God’s word is faithful and will surely come to pass.
