We are happy to announce you that we've launched an English page of Akada Jinja Shinto shrine.

It started at a workshop "Your 2nd business card made in Yoshiki" which we had some days ago, having Takashi Yamada, in Yoshiki area in Yamaguchi city. Fumiko Kimura, one of the organizers and the presenters of the workshop, brought up the idea of this English page as she has been eager to introduce beauty and great culture of Japan through Akada Jinja Shint

o shrine. We hope that it could be a little help for people in the world to get familiar with Japanese traditions, to deepen understanding of each other, to generate interactions and, ultimately, to realize world peace. Fumiko takes care of the translations, together with Ikuko Matsuno who she met at the workshop in Yoshiki. Wish you like this page!

翻訳を担われているのは、木村史子 (Kimura Fumiko)さんと松野郁子 (Ikuko Matsuno)さんです。
お二人は、山田崇 (Takashi Yamada)氏を講師に招いて先日開催したワークショップ『２枚目の名刺 made in Yoshiki』に参加され知り合われました。
英語訳は、松野さんの発案です。翻訳は山口と関東に離れ離れのお二人が、メールなどのやり取りで行われています。
お仕事で日常的に海外との取引をこなされる程の英語のスキルをお持ちの両名だけあって、短期間でここまで素晴らしい翻訳をなさいました。
お二人のご奉仕に感謝するとともに、このページから赤田神社というよりはむしろ日本の美しさ、素晴らしさを海外へ発信できたらと考えています。
これをきっかけに世界の人々に対して我が国の民俗や文化への理解が深まり、相互の交流を育み、大げさに言えば世界の平和につながっていけばと願っています。
お二人には本当にありがとうございました。

Steve, Welcome to Akadajinja Shrine in Yamaguchi
Yamaguchi city was selected by New York Times as the one of 52 Places to Go in 2024. He visited us from LA, California because of my childhood friend’s recommendation.

For the purification prayer, we prepared Tamagushi, a branch of a sacred tree offered to the dieties and Gohei, Strips of white paper to protect our home.

He was very good at cutting them with a knife that I didn't think was his first time.

At the Shinto rital, he put on the traditional Shrine priest costumes to attend. It looked surprisingly good on him.

He was a wonderful person who was friendly and full of humor. In addition, he was a very serious person and worked to understand Japanese culture all the time.

Thank you. We all enjoyed each other’s company.
I look forward to seeing you again.

同級生のお姉さんの紹介で、アメリカからＳさんが旅行で来られました。

御祈祷を希望されたので、その際に神様にお供えする玉串と持ち帰り用の御幣を作ってもらいました。初めてとは思えない刃物さばきで、とても良い出来映えでした。

神事では、装束を着けて参列してもらいました。とてもよく似合っておられました。

Ｓさんは気さくでユーモアあふれるすてきな方でした。また、とてもまじめな方で、日本の文化を理解しようと、終始真剣に取り組んでおられました。

とても楽しい時間をありがとうございました。
またお会いできることを楽しみにしています。

Along with New Year, a votive picture called "EMA" with a zodiac sign has been created with a wish for community peace, family security, good health, wealth, and happiness.

Ema is generally hung up at high place inside an architecture, but because a lot of visitors come to the shrine during New Year, it was displayed inside a room so that they can look closely at.
It was recently moved to a hall of worship called "HAIDEN,” where it supposed to be as New Year was over. *You can still look at, so please enjoy it if you have chance to visit us.

This plan, creating Ema, was realized after having a discussion with Ms. Sasaki Noriko, an artist painter in Yoshiki Sabata district, who has dedicated paints of cherry blossom and so forth up to now.

It is created with loving care by following people in Yoshiki district. One more precious treasure was added to Yoshiki district. Thank you, everyone.

お正月にあわせて、地域の安寧、家内安全、無病息災、福徳円満の願いを込めて干支絵馬を制作しました。

絵馬は、通常建物の高い場所に掲げますが、お正月からしばらくの間、参拝の方に近くでご覧いただけるように室内に展示していました。
この度、本来の場所である拝殿に掲げました。
こちらへ来られることがありましたら、是非ご覧ください。

この絵馬は、これまでも桜の絵などをご奉納いただいた吉敷佐畑の画家佐々木範子さんとお話をしていて十二支の絵馬を制作していこうということになり、実現したものです。

絵馬は下記の吉敷の皆さんが、丹精込めて制作されました。吉敷の宝物が、また一つ増えました。
皆さんありがとございました。

Mr. Tadayoshi Sato who lives in Yoshiki Akada donated a bell cord called SUZUNO-O.

I hope visitors can refreshingly worship by swinging it.

参拝者の方々も清々しくお参りなさることができるかと思います。

'Weave' by Ms.Noriko Sasaki.

The painting has been dedicated to the shrine commemorative of 1300th relocation anniversary.
From acient time, paintings have been offered to comfort the deities. As for Akada Jinja Shinto Shrine, it might have been about 100 years since a painting was dedicated last time. This oil painting describes the full-blooming cherry blossoms based on the shrine crest.
The tile is 'Weave'.
It is said that an old shrine is historically and culturally valuable because of its aged building. Local people in ancient time prayed here as we do today.
Maybe, the prayers in such old times have been woven into a lasting bond till now.
Thinking that way, the old shrine endured the wind and snow still accepts the ours, local people to pray in a dignified.
This painting will be exhibited for more a few hundred years.
How will the people in that area feel when they see it?
I would like to show our great thanks to Ms. Sasaki!!!

紡ぐ　佐々木範子さん

御遷座千三百年を記念して絵の奉納がありました。
神社には、古くから神様の御心和めにと絵が奉納されています。
赤田神社では、凡そ１００年ぶりの奉納と思われます。
この絵は油彩で社紋の桜にちなんで描いてくださいました。
題は「紡ぐ」です。
神社は古い建物などから歴史的、文化的に価値があるとよく言われます。
赤田神社がこの地に鎮まり１３００年が経ちました。
ここでは、今も大昔と変わりなく人々の祈りが続けられています。
それは、１３００年前から人々の心が紡がれ今に続いてます。
そう思うと、歳月を重ね霜雪に耐えた古い建物も、今も瑞々しい麗しい姿で私たちの参拝を受け入れてくれているように感じられます。
この絵は、これから数百年の間ここに飾り続けられることでしょう。
時々の人々は、この絵を見て何を感じるのでしょうか。

Ginkgo leaves covered up the ground in one night! We had strong winds last night which blew away the leaves to make this beautiful golden carpet on the ground like a magic.
Maple leaves have got turned bright red almost all of a sudden and are inviting you to come enjoy the view.

イチョウの木の葉が昨晩の強い風で降り積もっていました。
まるで、黄金色の絨毯を敷き詰めたようです。
モミジも急に見頃となりました。

The October monthly festival has been carried out.

After the typhoon has passed, many ginkgo nuts fell from trees.
They will be shared as the gifts from our deity at Akada Jinja Shrine in the New Years days.

A parishioner who lives nearby voluntarily picks up, cleans and packs them all by herself every year.

I thank her from the bottom of my heart.

十月の月次祭を斎行しました。

台風一過で銀杏がたくさん落ちました。
この銀杏は、お正月に神様からのお下がりとして社頭で配布します。

収穫から洗浄、袋詰めまでを、近所の氏子さんが毎年一人でご奉仕くださいます。ありがとうございます。

Performed a monthly festival for September.

It’s been a while since we had good amount of rain last time. Our property was covered by water, where a fresh water crab was visiting from the river by us.
Towards autumn when many typhoons hit Japan, we are a bit anxious about floods and other possible disasters may occur.

The monthly festival is a Shinto service to pray for people to live peacefully without a disaster.

９月の月次祭を斎行しました。

久しぶりにたくさんの雨が降りました。
水で浸された境内には、横の川からサワガニガ何匹か上がってきていました。
これから台風の時期となり、一層災害が起こることが気がかりです。

月次祭は、人々が災い無く幸せに暮らせるようにとの祈りが込められた神事でもあります。

Today is the first day of "BON".
"Bon" is a name of a special period of four days from August 13 to 16.
The ancestral spirits are returned from the other world to their families during this period.

We light up lanterns in front of family altars, Shinto or Buddhist, to guide the spirits smoothly come back to our home every year.
It is said that Japanese generally believe that ancestral spirits always protect
us together with the Shinto and Buddha.

Please try to light up the small candles or small bulbs (if you do not have any candles) with all your hearts to welcome ancestral spirits as "BON" event, even though you do not have any lanterns or family altars.

今日は『盆の入り』です。祖霊（祖先の御霊）があの世から子孫の元に帰ってくる日とされ、祖霊舎や仏壇の前に提灯をともし、それが帰家の道しるべになるともいわれています。
我が国には、神仏のほかに祖霊が私たちを守ってくださるという民俗的な信仰が根底にあると言われています。
提灯や祖霊舎、仏壇が無い家でもお盆の行事として、小さなロウソク（場合によっては電球）を心を込めて灯して、祖霊をお迎えされていはいかがでしょうか。

梅雨が明け、強い日差しが照り付けています。
先日、濁流となり恐ろしい姿を見せた川も今日は涼やかに瀬々らいでいました。
昼下がり。淵の近くで竿を出す親子の姿に、穏やかな時の流れを感じました。

The rainy season has been over, the sunlight is very strong.
Last week, muddy streams caused by the awfully heavy rains went through the river to show us menace of nature.
However, the river has flown gently and coolly today.

In the early afternoon, a father and his son enjoyed the fishing together near the abyss in the calm weather.
The peaceful time has been spent.

100 prayer ritual

The antique tool is equipped to count the number of prayers on pent roof built atop the stairs of a shrine (place where visitors ring the bell to pray).
It has been donated in the Meiji area, around 19 centry to count how many times visitors prayed.

Legend has it that a dream can come true when people visit the shrine and pray for 100 times.
It is called '100 prayer ritual'.
I have tried it some time ago.
Of cource, it sucessfully came true!!

お百度参り。
神社の向拝（鈴がさがっていて参拝者が拝むところ）の柱に、参拝の回数を数える器具があります。
明治時代に寄進されたもので、お百度参りの時などに用います。

神様に百度お参りすると願い事がかなうという昔からの言い伝えから、「お百度参り」とか「お百度を踏む」などと言われています。
随分前になりますが、私も一度お百度を踏んだことがありますが、その願いは見事に叶いました。

We performed a service for the war dead in Yoshiki area to offer prayers for peace in their spirits as well as to ask them to protect us from any disaster.
We in this country believe that spirits of someone who passed away and who we loved become guardians of us, therefore it is quite natural for us to ask them for divine grace when we go visit our ancestors’ grave, just like when we make a prayer to the god.

At the ceremony, a chorus called “Yui” chorused heartily as they had done in previous years. In prior to the chorus, the following poetry was dedicated by a member of “Yui”;

“Living today awake in the morning sun,
Surrounded by woods, welcome by breezes
And gathered with friends embracing one same wish.
The wish that has been given a birth by hundreds of thousands of lives, smiles, tears, angers, hopes and spirits handed over for the long time.
The wish will be handed over another hundred years to give the spirit an eternity.
We sing a song to bridge our wish and hopes in the future.”

This poetry sounds like having some spiritual power of words, which we from the ancient times call “Kotodama”.

吉敷地区戦没者慰霊祭を斎行しました。御霊の平安と、これからも私たちをお守りくださるよう祈念しました。
実は我が国には、亡くなった人の霊が私たちの守り神なるという信仰があります。このため、日本人が先祖を拝礼するとき、自然と「私たちをお守りください」と、神仏に対するときと同じように祈るのです。

式では、今年もコーラスyuiさんが合唱を捧げられました。
合唱に先立ち、メンバーが綴られた次のようなメッセージが添えられました。

「今、ここに生きているということ
朝日に照らされ、目覚めるということ
そして
森に包まれ、風に迎えられているということ
ここで仲間と集い、思いを一つにするということ
私たちの思いは
私たちが生み出したものではありません
私たちにつながるたくさんの命
たくさんの笑顔、たくさんの涙
たくさんの怒り、たくさんの望
たくさんの魂が受け継がれることによって
生み出されてきた思いです
思いが受け継がれていく限り
魂は決して滅びることはありません
だから私たちは歌います
思いを受け継ぎ
そして未来の希望につなげるために」

我が国には言挙げしたに言葉の霊力がある、「言霊信仰（ことだま）」というものがありますが、このメッセージには、そうした何かしらの力のようなものを感じました。
