17) Juzu (Buddhist rosary)

It is one of Monk’s belongings. It is a string of beads with nuts or stones. It is used when monks count the times of chanting prayers. It is almost the same usage as the catholic rosary. There are various shapes by religious sect. People also bring it to the funeral or Buddhist memorial services.

１７）　数珠

僧侶の持ち物に数珠があります。木の実や鉱石などの珠を糸で繋いだもので、念仏を唱えるとき回数を数えるために用います。カトリックのロザリオの用途と同じです。日本の数珠も宗派によって様々な形状があります。一般の人も葬儀や法事の際に携帯します。

16) Kesa (a surplice)

It is an outfit of monks to wear on a kimono at the Buddhist memorial services. The typical one is in yellow color with one shoulder, however, there are various ones in different colors by religious sect or grade. Now a days, some are designed with shiny gold thread, however, basically Kesa was a patchwork made of tattered clothes. Therefore, even now it is a patchwork made with pieces of the cloth which are cut from the clothes woven from the yarn.

１６）袈裟

僧侶が法要のときに着物の上に着けているのが袈裟です。ワンショルダーでターメリック色のものが基本ですが、宗派や階級によって様々な色の袈裟があります。現代では、たいへん煌びやかな金糸をあしらった袈裟もありますが、元々袈裟はぼろ布を寄せ集め、パッチワークにしたものでした。そのため今でも一旦織り上がった布にハサミを入れ、小さな布片にしてから縫い合わせて仕立てています。

15) Oni (an ogre or demon)

In Japan, it is believed to cause misfortune with evil sprits, however, Oni is afraid of beans so that it runs away. With such a humorous acting, it seems similar to a goblin in Europe. There are many old tales about Oni extermination where Oni does bad things within local communities.

日本では邪気をもって災いをもたらす存在とされる鬼ですが、豆を恐れて逃げるなど、どこか間の抜けたところはヨーロッパのゴブリンに似ているかもしれません。日本の昔話には鬼退治の話がたくさんあり、人々の身近なところで悪さをする者というイメージです。

14) Setsubun (division of the seasons)

It means the day before the beginning of each season (the first days of spring, summer, fall and winter). The most representative one is for spring around Feb. 4. On this day, temples and shrines held Tsuinashiki (ceremony to drive out evil spirits), meanwhile people throw beans in order to expel evil sprits in the house, shouting ‘Fuku wa uchi, Oni ha soto (In with luck! Out with the demon!). Setsubunsai (Setsubun festical) inYoshida shrine in Kyoto is very popular with many stalls where about 500,000 visitors enjoy the traditional event.

１４）節分

節分とは、日本に4つある季節の変わり目のうちの代表的な「立春(2月4日ごろ)」の前日を指します。この日は神社も寺院も豆まきや追儺式(鬼を追い払う儀式)を行いますが、各家庭でも豆を撒き、邪気を祓います。かけ声は「福は内、鬼は外」。京都の吉田神社の節分祭は露店が立ち並び、50万人の人出で賑わいます。

13) Hatsukobo & Hatsutenjin

There are monthly antique markets called Kobo-ichi & Tenjin-ichi, respectively known as Kobo-san & Tenjin-san, where many tourists visit and enjoy shopping. Besides of antiques, many street stalls sell foods and toys, so that local children get excited every month. Kobo-san is held on the 21st in Toji, and Tenjin-san on the 25th in Kitano-Tenmangu. The first market in the year is respectively called Hatsukobo (First Kobo) & Hatsutenjin (First Tenjin) crowded with people. The last ones in December are called Shimaikobo (Last Kobe) & Shimaitenjin (Last Tenjin).
