[Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony Venue Introduction] Edo-Tokyo Open-Air Architectural Museum
This open-air museum is located within Koganei Park, one of Tokyo's largest metropolitan parks.
The museum relocates, restores, preserves, and displays historically significant buildings from Edo and Tokyo. These structures have high cultural value, but it is difficult to preserve them in their original locations. The museum allows visitors to enjoy a streetscape that feels like a journey back in time.
In addition to tea ceremonies held within these historic buildings, the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony features events throughout the park!

【東京大茶会 会場紹介：江戸東京たてもの園】
都立公園のなかでも最大規模を誇る小金井公園内に位置する野外博物館です。
失われていく江戸・東京の、現地保存が難しい文化的価値の高い歴史的建造物を移築し、復元・保存・展示しており、タイムスリップしたような街並みを楽しめます。
東京大茶会では、歴史的建造物を活用した茶席のほか、園内各所でイベントを開催予定です！

[Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony 2026 Confirmed!]
The Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony, a Tokyo fall tradition, is back again this year!
It will be held on October 24 and 25 at the Edo-Tokyo Open-Air Architectural Museum and on October 31 and November 1 at the Hamarikyu Gardens.
Once again, we will be offering programs that allow anyone to casually enjoy the tea ceremony.

[Traditional Culture & Performing Arts Tips]Uchimizu and Chanoyu, the Way of Tea
It's been a string of hot days, hasn't it? Recently, uchimizu, the practice of sprinkling water on the ground to cool the air, has gained attention as an eco-friendly way to beat the heat.
It is said that uchimizu originated with the Way of Tea. It was apparently performed as a purification ritual and a matter of etiquette before tea ceremonies. During the Edo period, the practice spread among commoners as a way to cool and prevent dust from swirling around. It also began to appear in haiku and ukiyo-e prints.

【伝統文化・芸能TIPS】打ち水と茶の湯
暑い日が続きますね。近年、地面に水をまいて涼をとる「打ち水」が環境にやさしい暑さ対策として注目されるようになりました。
打ち水は、茶の湯が起源ともいわれています。茶事の前の清めや礼儀作法として打ち水が行われていたそうです。江戸時代には涼をとったり、土埃が舞うのを防ぐ習慣として庶民の間にも広がり、俳句や浮世絵にも登場するようになりました。

[Applications due by August 11! ] We are now accepting applications for "Traditional Performing Arts for Kids” program for the 2026 fiscal year.
This experiential program is designed for children who are encountering traditional performing arts for the first time.
Leading performers from Nohgaku, Sankyoku, Nagauta, and Nihonbuyo will teach the children with the goal of having them perform on an impressive stage.
There are only two weeks left until the application deadline. Be sure to check out this highly popular program!

[Traditional Culture and Performing Arts Experience Program for Kids]
Professional performers and artisans visit schools, to give children the opportunity to experience traditional culture and performing arts through sight, sound, and physical participation.
This time, the children tried their hands at "Edo woodblock printing," a multicolor woodblock printing technique used in ukiyo-e.
With this technique, multiple colors can be layered precisely by aligning the paper with the grooves on the printing block called "kentō" and printing.
The children made multi-color folding fans featuring designs created as part of a collaborative project with the zoo. It gave them a chance to experience the world of ukiyo-e firsthand.

【子供のための伝統文化・芸能体験】浮世絵に使われた技術を体験！
プロの実演家や職人が学校を訪問して、子供たちが、伝統文化・芸能の世界を体験するプログラム。
今回子供たちが挑戦したのは「江戸木版画」。浮世絵に使われていた多色摺りの木版画技術です。
江戸木版画では、版木上の「見当（けんとう）」と呼ばれる溝に紙を合わせて摺ることで何色刷りになっても複数の色をずれなく重ねることができます。
子供たちは動物園とのコラボ企画で制作されたデザインの多色摺りのうちわ作りに挑戦。浮世絵の世界に触れたひと時でした。

The hichiriki is a wind instrument used in gagaku, Japan’s classical music.
A unique playing technique of the hichiriki involves subtly adjusting the pitch through breathing and lip position. This technique is called "Enbai," though there are various theories about its origin.
The modern Japanese term "Anbai," which refers to a state of balance and moderation achieved through subtle adjustments, is said to derive from the name of this playing technique.

【伝統文化・芸能TIPS】語源シリーズ：雅楽が由来とされる言葉「塩梅（あんばい）」
日本の古典音楽・雅楽の管楽器である「篳篥（ひちりき）」。
息づかいや唇の位置で音程を微妙に変えながら吹く篳篥ならではの代表的な奏法は
「塩梅（えんばい）」と呼ばれています（諸説あり）。
微妙な調整で、物事のバランスや加減がちょうど良い、ほど良い状態を、
現代日本語で「塩梅（あんばい）」というのは、この奏法名に由来するそうです。

For this year's program, applications start being accepted from today, Wednesday, July 1. Professional performers from Nohgaku, Nagauta, Sankyoku, and Nihonbuyo, will teach the children with the goal of having them perform on a professional stage.

[Traditional Culture and Performing Arts Experience Program for Kids]
Professional performers and artisans visit schools, giving children the opportunity to experience traditional culture and performing arts through sight, sound, and physical participation.
This year, the program will feature a total of 16 genres, including Noh theater, Japanese dance, various traditional Japanese musical instruments, Rakugo, and performing arts and crafts designated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

[One day at Traditional Performing Arts Experience for Kids] Final Performance Where Everyone Gave Their All!
Over the course of several months, the children received lessons from professional performers, showcasing the results of their hard work this spring. They performed on prestigious stages, such as the National Noh Theater and the Asakusa Public Hall.
For most of the children, this was their first experience of formal training and performing on such grand stages. They seemed to be nervous, but they all did a fantastic job!
Registration for the 2026 session of this popular program will begin soon on July 1 (Wed).

【ある日のキッズ伝統芸能体験】みんなが頑張った発表会！
この春、子供たちが、数か月にわたってプロの実演家からお稽古を受け、その成果を発表しました！会場は、国立能楽堂や浅草公会堂といった、本格的な舞台。
ほとんどの子供たちにとって、お稽古も、大舞台での発表も初めての体験です。緊張した様子でしたが、みんなとても頑張りました！
