Yesterday, when the Church honored the memory of Saint Isidore of Chios and Saint Therapon, thoughts spontaneously travel to those blessed journeys that are not measured in kilometers, but in tears of emotion, in prayers, in faces, in moments that touched the soul.
There are journeys that tire the body and there are also those that rest the heart. Spiritual excursions, pilgrimages, visits to monasteries and holy places, were never simply movements from place to place. They were internal journeys. A silent apprenticeship of faith, love and human encounter.
How many times have roads been opened to Chios, to Saint Isidore, where the sea seems to whisper prayers of centuries… How many times has the soul found peace in the fragrance of the candle and the silence… And how many times has Mytilene, with the grace of Saint Therapontos, become a harbor of comfort and hope. Where different people became a companion, a family under the gaze of the Saints.
This is the great value of spiritual contemplativeism; that people cease to be strangers. They become fellow travelers. They are bound not by interest, but by a common quest. By the need to ignite a little more light within them. In buses, in monastery courtyards, in vigils and at simple tables with a little bread and love, true friendships were born. Relationships that have endured time. People who stood by each other through the easy and the difficult, the joys and the trials of life.
And what a beautiful miracle this is… For someone to set out to worship a Saint and ultimately meet people who become a gift from God in their lives.
Through these pilgrimages, so many people met so many Saints. They learned about their lives, were moved by their martyrdom, and gained strength from their faith. They visited monasteries forgotten in the mountains, small chapels by the sea, places where prayer left an imprint of centuries. And each such visit left within them a seed Sometimes of consolation, sometimes of repentance, sometimes of hope.
Spiritual excursions do not only offer images and memories. They offer a transformation of the soul. They teach people to love more essentially, to forgive more easily, to be moved more truly. They remind him that life is not only a daily struggle and wear and tear, but also an encounter, and faith, and light.
And perhaps this is ultimately the greatest blessing of all these years: that through roads, ships, monasteries and pilgrimages, hearts were united. That people became friends, brothers, each other's support. That the Saints did not remain distant figures in books, but became a living presence in the everyday life of so many souls.
So yesterday, a blessed day, the memory of Saint Isidore and Saint Therapon becomes an occasion for gratitude. For all those beautiful journeys of faith. For the prayers, the smiles, the acquaintances, the emotions. For those moments when heaven seemed a little closer to earth and people a little closer to each other.
