Please Read Before Asking Questions

Thank you for visiting our church's page. We are a small community, made up mostly of older parishioners. There is no resident priest at the church, and we receive many inquiries from abroad. While we welcome visitors to Kyoto during holidays, we kindly ask that you keep the following in mind:

1) Mass is celebrated only once at 9:00 AM on Sundays, except on the third Sunday of the month and on the fifth if there is one in the month.

2) Masses are held only in Japanese. However, we provide English booklets for each Sunday, free of charge. Please note that we only have around 15 copies available.

3) Unfortunately, we are unable to offer special weekday Masses for visitors.

We receive many inquiries, but most of the questions can be answered by this message.

If your schedule aligns with our Mass times, we would be delighted to have you join us. If not, the church is usually open for personal prayer. While the main entrance is closed, visitors can enter through a side door about 30 meters to the right of the main entrance.

We hope your visit to Kyoto is pleasant and filled with wonderful memories.

Our parish is very small, so we don’t have any mass of Holy Thursday and the Easter Vigil. The mass of Easter Sunday will be celebrated at 9:00 only in Japanese. (There are some English handouts of the Bible text to read for the mass,though.)

Holy Week 2017 at St. Joseph's
As our Rakuhoku Block of the churches in the Diocese of Kyoto does not have enough preists to celebrate the masses of this Holy Week, we are really sorry that we do not have the masses of Holy Thursday and the Easter Vigile. The service of Holy Friday is celebrated by the newly-ordained priest Fr. Otsuka at 15:00. And the holy mass of the Easter Sunday will be celebrated at 9:00 in the morning as usual Sunday masses are.

　今日のミサは北村神父様の司式で、50名（うち修道者7名）でお捧げしました。先週の福音朗読ははたえず祈る事でした。今日の福音朗読は私たちのあり方についてです。
　ファリサイ派の人々は宗教的エリートで、律法を守ることに命をかけています。熱心なユダヤ教徒と讃えられていました。徴税人はユダヤでは罪の代表とされる人たちです。しかし、今日のたとえ話では、義とされて帰ったのは徴税人の方でした。神に受け入れられることは、すなわち救われ事でした。ファリサイ派の人はうぬぼれていました。つまり自分自身だけに頼っていました。これは当時のユダヤ教の雰囲気を醸し出すことでした。イエスは律法を破壊し、打ち砕きました。後々、キリスト教はヨーロッパ中に広まり、また先祖帰りしてしまいました。週1回ミサにあずかり、大斎小斉を守り、維持費を払うと天国行きが保障され、義とされると思われてきました。
　実は救われるのはイエスです。私が何かをやったから救われるというのはうぬぼれで間違いです自分で自分を義とすることはできません。私たちの不完全さは神との関係を絶つものではありません。むしろイエスと出会う場になるものです。自分のことをひしひしと感じることができるのです。自分が完全なものであれば宗教など不要です。不完全や罪は本当は自分の力ではなくせはしません。それがわかると、イエスだけが私を救うことができるとはっきり見えてきます。自分のありのままを差し出せば、神様が受け入れて下さいます。
　本当のことを言うと、自分を差し出そうが差し出さまいが、イエスは私を受け止めて下さっています。だからこそ自分をありのまま差し出せるのです。イエスが私たち受け入れて下さる時、何の条件もありません。無条件なのです。そしてそれを信じることができることが信仰です。せれを味わい、間違った解釈があれば修正できるよう、祈りましょう。
