Dear Kobe Union Church and Friends,
As I reflect on the year 2025, I am reminded that despite the busyness—and at times the almost frantic pace of life—the only true place of peace is found in living within the will of our Father. Scripture assures us, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26:3).
While 2025 has been personally challenging for some within our church family, as a community it has also been a year of witnessing what the Lord can do when His people trust Him. We have seen God’s faithfulness again and again, just as His Word promises: “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20).
As you know, Stephanie and I are currently in Toledo, Ohio USA, this evening watching our granddaughter Chloe while her parents enjoy a night out. I truly cannot think of a better way to ring in the New Year than watching our first grandchild. It has been a gentle reminder that God often meets us in ordinary moments with extraordinary grace.
As we look ahead to 2026, we do so with hope—not because we know what the year will hold, but because we know the One who holds us. The Lord speaks these words to His people: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). These words remind us that even when the path ahead feels uncertain, God’s purposes are good, and His heart toward us is faithful.
We know we will face challenges in the coming year, but we also trust that the Lord will meet us in our various places of need. He will guide us, strengthen us, and continue to call us to be His salt and light here in Kobe and, for some of us, around the world (Matthew 5:13–16).
May we step into 2026 with confidence, humility, and hope, trusting that “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).
