We dined on wild boar hot pot and grilled mountain fish. The owner of the restaurant’s father was a famous hunter. His trophies are on display throughout the restaurant. We dine old Japanese style. The hearth in the floor, iori.
The owner of the restaurant told us lots of stories over our meal.
There are three waterfalls nearby. The smallest is the Tengu falls. A tengu, a creature red with wings and a long nose used to live by the falls. A Buddhist monk came to tame the tengu and dragons in the area. Many of the temples here are dedicated to the dragons in the area.
The rocks of the Tengu falls are shaped remarkably like a woman’s private parts. Geisha and oiran were famous for bathing under the falls for purification. It was a secret geisha place.
That is why the late Japanese prime minister Kakue Tanaka had an interest in the place and stay in the hot springs nearby.

The spider lily is a beautiful flower blooming in the rice harvest. 5 million are blooming in one area nearby. Even the Emperor came last year to enjoy the flowers. Five minutes away are the tombs of the Royal Koryeo family who escaped here after being defeated by Tang China 1200 years ago.

Rain is best for touring through the mountains in search of a limestone cave for shelter. Monks lived with bears in these caves thousands of years ago. Every rock has deep spiritual meaning.

The rice harvest is in full swing. After the rain, weather was perfect for paragliding. We went to the top of the mountain. Unraveled our gear waiting for the right gust to lift us into the sky. Suddenly to wind changed 180 degrees. That was the end of our flight. We enjoyed an egg udon picnic for lunch.

I went deep into the high mountains to discuss accommodation for my tours with a wonderful monk. His temple is hidden deep in the forest, far away from civilization. The monk l is a very, gentle, kind man living with 8 giant dogs. He speaks very good English and the place is perfect for two day trips for my tours. The countryside is stunning. Steep mountains, thick forest. I met the largest boar on the side of the road. The size of a small horse. It was too dangerous to get out and photograph. The temple will close for accommodation December to February as the roads ice over making driving there very difficult. In those months there is another kind monk with a temple near the Bamboo Temple.
