12Aug. It is almost time to close the temple for the day. Perhaps because of the typhoon, the weather has become a little cooler, and rain is expected tonight as well. With summer holidays underway, we have also welcomed walking pilgrims from overseas. Tonight, the city center will be filled with the lively festivities of the Awa Odori dance festival. But the walking pilgrims told me that they were not concerned with the festivities tonight. They would rather go to bed early and get a good rest in preparation for tomorrow's walk.

10Aug. early this morning, we had a brief shower over the area around the temple. It was a welcome bit of natural watering for the grounds after such a long dry spell. some of the trees around the temple grounds have been struggling and are beginning to wither due to the lack of water. It looks like we will need to continue watering them every day for a while longer. we are grateful for even a little rain. 🙏

The air has become noticeably cooler in the mornings and evenings, but daytime temperatures are still around 35°C, so it remains very hot. Please take good care of yourselves and continue your pilgrimage safely.

As I reflect on those affected by the major earthquake in Kumamoto, and on the many people risking their own safety to carry out rescue and recovery efforts under these harsh conditions, my heart is filled with deep compassion and prayers. May the boundless light and wisdom of Dainichi Nyorai (Mahāvairocana Buddha) embrace and protect all who are suffering, and grant strength, safety, and hope to everyone working to bring relief. In autumn, it will produce small, round berries in beautiful shades of purple and white. I am already looking forward to those cool autumn mornings when they appear. With fewer pilgrims visiting during this hot season, walking pilgrims naturally stand out more than usual. 18July. Good morning.The water lilies look so cool and refreshing in their pots, filled with plenty of water. But the temperature has already reached 30°C. Yesterday, despite the heat, I met a woman who was running the pilgrimage route between the sacred sites. She is working toward completing the Shikoku pilgrimage for the second time—and, remarkably, she has been running the pilgrimage both times. Each person undertakes the Shikoku pilgrimage with their own goals, hopes, and personal reasons. I deeply respect each of these individual journeys. 🙏 Gasshō
