WHY THE CHURCH USES YEARS A, B, C
(UNDERSTANDING THE LITURGICAL CYCLE)

Many Catholics attend Mass every Sunday…
They hear different readings…
Different Gospels…

But few ask:
Why does the Church arrange readings this way?
What are Years A, B, and C?

1. WHAT ARE YEARS A, B, C? (TRADITION)
The Church follows a three-year cycle of Sunday readings, designed to present the life and teachings of Christ in an ordered way.

* Year A → Focuses mainly on the Gospel of Matthew
* Year B → Focuses mainly on the Gospel of Mark
* Year C → Focuses mainly on the Gospel of Luke
(Source: Tradition – Lectionary of the Church)

2. WHAT ABOUT THE GOSPEL OF JOHN? (SCRIPTURE)
The Gospel of John is not assigned to one single year.

Instead, it is used during:
* Major seasons (Lent & Easter)
* Important feasts and solemnities
This gives deeper theological reflection on Christ.

3. WHY DOES THE CHURCH USE A CYCLE?
The goal is simple:
* To expose the faithful to a wide portion of Scripture
* To avoid repetition of only a few passages
* To guide believers through the life of Christ step by step

4. DOES THIS HELP CATHOLICS READ THE BIBLE?
Yes, powerfully.

Through regular Mass attendance:
* Catholics hear Old Testament
* Psalms
* New Testament letters
* Gospels
Over time, this cycle presents a large portion of the Bible in an organized way.

5. WHO ESTABLISHED THIS SYSTEM?
The modern three-year cycle was expanded after the Second Vatican Council to deepen the faithful’s engagement with Scripture.
It is guided by the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and the Lectionary.

6. WHY NOT JUST READ RANDOM PASSAGES?
Because the Church is not random.

She teaches with order and purpose:
* Each Sunday builds on a theme
* Each season reflects a mystery (Advent, Lent, Easter)
* Each year deepens understanding of Christ

IN SUMMARY… THE CHURCH TEACHES WITH STRUCTURE
Year A → Matthew
Year B → Mark
Year C → Luke
John → Key seasons
This is not just reading…
It is formation.

Today, reflect:
“Am I just hearing the readings… or following the journey?”
…and let the Word of God grow in you

✝️ WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU MISS MASS DELIBERATELY?
___________________
Sunday morning arrives.

The Church bells ring.

The altar is prepared.

Heaven opens.

And Christ invites you to His banquet.

Yet many say:

"I'll go next week."

Or worse:

"I don't feel like going today."

That choice is far more serious than many realize.

✝️ THE THIRD COMMANDMENT STILL MATTERS

God commanded:

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy."

For Christians, this obligation is fulfilled on Sunday, the Day of the Lord.

The Church does not invent this command.

She safeguards it.

Attending Mass on Sundays and holy days is one of the fundamental obligations of Catholic life.

It is not merely a recommendation.

It is a command rooted in divine law.

✝️ DELIBERATE ABSENCE IS GRAVE MATTER

To knowingly and freely miss Sunday Mass without a serious reason—such as illness, caring for an infant, or unavoidable circumstances—is a mortal sin.

That is the clear teaching of the Catholic Church.

Why so serious?

Because the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life.

To deliberately reject it is to reject a gift beyond price.

It is not simply breaking a rule.

It is wounding a relationship.

✝️ WHAT YOU LOSE

When you miss Mass deliberately, you lose:

the grace of the Eucharist,

the nourishment of God's Word,

communion with the Church,

and the special blessings attached to Sunday worship.

More importantly, your soul grows weaker.

A branch separated from the vine does not flourish.

Neither do we.

✝️ BEFORE RECEIVING COMMUNION AGAIN

If you have deliberately missed Mass, you should not receive Holy Communion until you have first gone to Confession.

Mortal sin and Holy Communion cannot coexist.

Saint Paul warns us against receiving unworthily.

The remedy is simple and beautiful:

Repent.

Confess.

Return.

The Church is always ready to welcome you home.

✝️ GOD IS NOT KEEPING ATTENDANCE—HE IS CALLING YOU

Mass is not about checking a box.

It is about answering an invitation.

The Creator of the universe desires your presence.

Not because He needs you.

Because He loves you.

Missing Mass deliberately says, in effect:

"Something else matters more today."

That is why it is spiritually dangerous.

✝️ FINAL WORD

God gave you seven days.

He asks for one hour.

Not for His sake.

For yours.

The saints did not die for entertainment.

Christ died for the Eucharist.

Do not treat lightly what Heaven values infinitely.

✝️ REMEMBER THIS ALWAYS

If you fall, return.

If you have missed Mass, go to Confession.

If you are tempted to stay home, remember Who is waiting for you.

At every Mass, Calvary becomes present.

And Jesus is there.

Waiting.

For you.

Have you ever walked into a church during Eucharistic Adoration and wondered, “What exactly am I supposed to do here?” Many people feel unsure at first. But the truth is simple: during Adoration, you are spending time with Jesus Christ truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. You do not need special words, you just need an open heart.

1. BEGIN BY ENTERING QUIETLY AND MAKING THE SIGN OF THE CROSS.
When you enter the church or chapel, walk in quietly and respectfully. Catholics usually genuflect (kneel briefly on one knee) toward the Blessed Sacrament to show reverence.

This simple action reminds us that we are in the presence of the Lord.

The Bible says:
“Come, let us bow down and worship him; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.” - Psalm 95:6 (GNB)

Reverence prepares your heart to meet God.

2. SPEND A FEW MOMENTS IN SILENCE.
Before saying any prayers, just sit or kneel quietly. Let your mind slow down. Take a deep breath. Become aware that Jesus is truly present.

Silence is not empty, it is where God speaks to the heart.

Silence helps you listen to God.

3. SPEAK TO JESUS FROM YOUR HEART.
You can talk to Jesus the same way you talk to a close friend. Tell Him about:
Your worries
Your family
Your plans
Your struggles
Your gratitude
You do not need formal language. Just be honest.

The Bible reminds us:
“Cast all your worries on him, because he cares for you.” - 1 Peter 5:7 (GNB)

Prayer is a conversation, not a performance.

4. READ THE BIBLE OR A SPIRITUAL BOOK.
Many people bring a Bible, prayer book, or devotional to help them focus. Reading Scripture allows God’s Word to guide your prayer.

You might read:
A Psalm
The daily Gospel
A short spiritual reflection

God often speaks through His Word.

5. PRAY TRADITIONAL CATHOLIC PRAYERS.
If you are not sure what to say, you can use familiar prayers such as:
The Our Father
The Hail Mary
The Glory Be
The Rosary
Psalm 51 or Psalm 23

These prayers help keep your mind centered on God.

Simple prayers keep the heart focused.

6. OFFER YOUR INTENTIONS TO GOD.
Adoration is a powerful time to pray for others. You can bring the needs of your family, community, and the world before Jesus.

You may pray for:
Healing
Protection
Guidance
Forgiveness
Peace

The Bible says:
“Pray for one another, so that you may be healed.” - James 5:16 (GNB)

Intercession is an act of love.

7. END WITH THANKSGIVING.
Before leaving, take a moment to thank Jesus for the time you spent with Him, even if you felt distracted or unsure.

Gratitude strengthens faith.

The Bible reminds us:
“Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good.” - Psalm 107:1 (GNB)

Thanksgiving completes prayer.

A SIMPLE 30-MINUTE ADORATION PLAN (Beginner-Friendly)

First 5 minutes:
Be quiet and settle your mind.

Next 10 minutes:
Talk to Jesus about your life.

Next 10 minutes:
Read a short passage from the Bible.

Last 5 minutes:
Pray for others and give thanks.

Overall, you do not need to be perfect, eloquent, or experienced to spend time in Eucharistic Adoration. Just come as you are and sit with Jesus Christ. Even a short visit can bring peace, strength, and clarity to your heart.

Adoration is not about doing many things, it is about being with Someone who loves you.

Now you know.
