Colossians 3: 1- 4
(1.) Background & brief review on the past lessons. We are now on the 4th Sunday of our series in the Book of Colossians. We will be focusing on chapter 3 Verses 1 - 4, but it will be good for us to do a brief review of our past lessons.
*(a.) The main purposes of Paul in writing this letter to the Church - A clearer understanding & appreciation of these facts will help us relate our present condition with that of the Colossian Church in spite of the thousands years gap with us.
*Paul's general purposes were first of all, to show the Deity & supremacy of Christ in the face of spreading heresy in the city - 1: 18- 19, 2: 9. The message from the Book of Colossians is very much relevant today because we can see that the number of false teachers have tremendously increased in our time & so false teachings & false doctrines have spread all over the world to deceive the people who have put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as well as preventing worldly people from possible chance of believing in God & in the Lord Jesus Christ. By emphasizing the incomparable attributes of the Lord Jesus Christ above all, it will strengthen the faith of all true believers until the end; while those who reject the truth about Him might be enlightened & bring them to repentance.
*Secondly, he wanted to lead the believers into spiritual maturity- 1: 28, 2: 6- 7. Genuine Christians cannot remain spiritual babies as Paul told the believers in the Corinthian Church as well. They are expected to grow deeper in their spiritual life in order not to be deceived by false teachings & to move toward the fullness of life in Christ. *Thirdly, Paul wanted to inform them about his real condition & requested for prayers on his behalf - (4: 2-8).
*(b.)The recepients of the letter - *First of all, the Book of Colossians is directed to those who have put their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, & believed that they were chosen by God even before the foundation of the world. Since the Bible is the Living Word of God, relevant & intented for all generations, these teachings are very much directed to us who are living in the last days.
*For those who are not sure of their relationship with God through the Lord Jesus Christ, we pray that the grace of God may come upon you as you listen & that the Holy Spirit may open your hearts not only to understand the message but that you may be able to respond to the love of God.
*May we be reminded again that those who have responded in faith to the call & invitation of the Lord Jesus Christ, have received eternal salvation for their souls. They have become citizens of heaven, & therefore commanded to live their lives in Christ Jesus. *They are instructed & commanded to pursue spiritual maturity & live their lives for the honor & glory of God.
(c.) The main reason of God the Son in coming to earth as a human - The eternal God the Son came down to earth in the flesh & took the nature of a man like us (but without sin) & He offered His sinless Blood & very life as ransom for our sins, bailed us out from the curse of sin & death.
*As we continue with our lesson, we need to go back to what we have slightly touched last Sunday - Col. 3: 1- 4 in order to have a complete flow of thoughts & broader understanding on what the Lord wanted to emphasize in the life of those who belong to His kingdom. (Read Col. 3: 1-4)
Paul had given important pieces of advice, instructions, lessons & encouragement to the Christians in Colosse toward spiritual maturity, extendng it up to the whole 3rd chapter wherein practical applications of Christian values, attitudes & practices are specifically being pointed out. ( But we will only focus on Verses 1-4 today).
*(2.) The Christians who have actually received a New Life in Christ are instructed to to set their heart or rather the desires of their hearts on the things of the eternal - 3: 1 - 2.
*(a.) The true believers' lives should be dominated by the patterns of heaven. The desires of the hearts & the focus of life of those who belong to this world are on the ways & concerns of worldly life, but those belonging to the kingdom of God are expected to have already turned away from this k8 do of worldly life.
*The life of the children of God should no longer be focused on worldly ways & worldly life-style. They should no longer spend their life in self-indulgence or enjoyment & satisfaction of the flesh with material & earthly things, but instead everything should now be directed toward heavenly concerns.
*The word "set" means "to seek or strive for earnestly," fixing their attention dicisively toward the things above, wherein the glorified Christ becomes the center of their lives.
*(b.) Those who belong to the eternal family of God should concentrate their concerns on the eternal & no longer on the temporal. They should fix their (spiritual) eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen which is eternal - 2 Cor. 4: 18. This verse does not only confirms what was said in V. 1 & 2 but it also gives a strong impact on this Command. *This particular matter is one of the weaknesses of many Christians because of the very strong influence of this material world wherein the devil is dominating the lives of people by offering attractive but deceitful way of living.
*This does not mean however, that we would no longer take responsibility on the things that concerns our earthly life. God has temporarily placed us in this world & has given us life to live & enjoy His Creation & all the provisions for life which He made available to all of us.
He has intended from the beginning that we would enjoy the the beauty of His Creation along with all the amenities of life, but with responsibility to take care of everything that is in it - Gen. 1: 28, Gen. 2: 15.
*Some children of God are given the privilege to handle greater material wealth, but they are not supposed to take the advantage of enjoying the fleshly benefits of material prosperity because it will durely cause them to fall into satan's trap of self- indulgence to worldly happiness; instead, it should be an apportunity to be God's instruments & a channels of His blessings to others - 2 Cor. 9: 6- 13.
*In times of material prosperity, a child of God always have in his heart & mind the fact that his purpose is to glorify God with all that he has. On the other hand, in times of poverty, a child of God looks up to heaven with a thankful heart that his portion is the Lord Himself. In whatever situation therefore, the heart of a child of God is focused on what is in store for him in eternity & not on the temporal things & earthly condition of life.
*When man fell into sin, man's heart was enslaved by the devil & affected his perspective & purpose in life. Since then man lost his connection with God & became self-centered in all his desires focusing on what could satisfy his flesh, his eyes & his ego. Since then, the desires of man's heart were focused on the things that this material world can offer.
*(c.) The general spiritual condition of man - Since all have sinned as a result of our first parents' sin & this world was placed under the power of the evil one, man's heart was enslaved by a desire for self-happiness & self-satisfaction from the things that this material world offers. Having been separated from God, man has lost his perspective of the eternal & desired primarily for the things that can give pleasure & satisfaction of the flesh through the influence of the prince of darkness.
*On th other hand, those who have been saved by the grace of God & responded in faith were raised up with Christ; which means that they, or we, have died (our old sinful self) with Christ & when He resurrected from the dead, we too were raised up to a new beginning & a new way of living. This fact is explained earlier in 2: 12-13. This reality is also well emphasized in Ro. 6: 8 - 12.
*For this reason, we are no longer of this world. We are still in this world but we do not belong to this world anymore - Phil. 3: 20. Our desires, perspectives & values in life are no longer according to the concerns of the flesh but according to the things of eternal value.
*Since we have died in our old sinful self, our life now is hiden in Christ - Gal. 2: 20. Because of this truth, our life is no longer focused in pursuing the things that the material world keeps offering. Knowing that these things can never satisfy the heart & the soul, but are just temporary which will vanish sooner than we expect; our hearts & minds are now focused on heavenly things that will give us eternal joy & eternal peace.
*We are no longer enslaved by worldly desires, self-centered ambition & praises of men, instead, our heart's desire & purusuit is to accomplish the purpose of God & a life that will bring glory & honor to His Name. *We are no longer worried with our day to day needs in this material world because we know that God takes care of our needs if our main concern is the concern of God's eternal kingdom & our desire is to live a life pleasing to God Matt. 6: 33.
*For a true Christian, life in this world is not defined by possessing anything in this material world but rather a life that is lived by a power beyond this world, the power of the Resurrected, Ascended & glorified Christ.
*(3.) At the moment of salvation, a person has died in his sinful flesh possessing the sin nature - V. 3. The word "hidden" implies both concealment & safety, invisible but secured. He is not yet glorified, but he is secure & safe in Christ. In fact, Christ is his very life -Jn. 14: 19 - 20, Eph. 1: 13-14
*(4.) The most awaited moment - the coming of the glorified Christ for His own - V.4.
What is mentioned here is the"Rapture," - 1 Thes. 4: 15- 18. The word "Rapture" is not in the English Bible, but it came from the Latin word "Rapturo" from which comes the term "Rapture" which means "caught up." The true believers & followers of Christ, those who were chosen before the foundation of the world & responded in faith when they were called, evidenced by the kind of life expected from genuine children of God, will be caught up in the air; first, those who were dead in Christ will rise, then in a moment thereafter, those who are still alive in Christ will be "caught up" in the air to meet the glorified Christ.
*The Prophesy of the Rapture is as sure to be fulfilled as the Prophecies of Christ's death & resurrection.
*The most glorious moment that true believers & followers of the Lord Jesus is the moment that when His glory is revealed during the Rapture, we will also be revealed in His likeness - 1 Cor. 15: 51- 58.

Colossians 1: 24 - 3: 1- 4
This is the 3rd Sunday of our series of study on the Book of Colossians. For the past 2 Sundays we have heard fairly enough for us to understand the amazing facts about the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal God, One with the Father & Creator of the universe. We were reminded about all that He has done to rescue us from our hopeless spiritual condition. All His amazing works in order to save us from eternal damnation because of our sins were beyond human understanding .
*We have also learned so much about the Lord's incomparable attributes beyond beyond human comprehension. His amazing & incomparable love for all those whom He has chosen even before the foundation of the world was proven by everything He has done for us; & there is no way we can repay Him. The only way we can do is to continually desire & seek to be filled with all the knowledge He wants us to know about Him & enough wisdom to understand His sovereign power & will. *Even now however, with all that we have already understood is more than enough reason for us to fully surrender ourselves to His eternal plan & purpose for our lives.
*Our most important desire & pursuit in our entrire life therefore, should be to bring glory to our eternal God. That's why we should continually pursue a deeper knowledge & understanding about the incomparable attributes of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, with a deep desire to live our lives not to our self- serving agenda according to His perfect will.
*Today, we will continue our study from where we stopped last Sunday here in Colossians 1: 24 all the way down to chapter 3 until we find ourserves emersed into a deeper understanding of the Lord's will for us who believe to be belonging to His spiritual & eternal family. Just to start up as an introduction to our lesson, we will only be reading chapter from 1 V. 24 to 29. We will gradually deal with chapters 2 & 3 by pointing out to every specific lesson in every verse or group of verses.
*(1.) A true believer's suffering for Christ's sake is a privilege - V. 24 - 25. (This is what many preachers avoid to teach).
*Paul rejoiced that he was able to suffer on behalf of the Colossian Christians. From the words of Paul, he did not mean that Christ's suffering on the cross was insufficient because it was perfecty complete - Heb. 2: 9 -10. Paul was refering not about salvation but of service. The term "affliction" of Christ mentioned by Paul means "distress" or "trouble" which ordinarily refers to trials in life.
*Paul was pointing out that Christ actually continues to suffer when Christians suffer for Him. In this connection, he was saying that he was rejoicing in his suffering for the sake of the believers because he was suffering on behalf of the Church (the Body of Christ), which in effect he was joyfully sharing in the suffering of the Lord wherein he was bestowed stewarship in ministering & preaching the Word of God.
*(2.) True believers in Christ should pursue spiritual growth - V. 28 - 29, 2: 1-5. He did not want them to be like the Corinthian Christians- 1 Cor. 3: 1- 3. The writer of the Book of Hebrews has something to say about this too - Heb. 5: 11 - 14. Paul was urging the believers in Colossae not to remain spiritual babies but to strive into spiritual maturity, first of all, so that they might not be influenced by false teachings. Secondly, he wanted to present everyone perfect in Christ (which means maturity in faith & in widom)- 2: 2- 5.
*The desire of every true Church leader who is actually a servant of God is to bring everyone who belongs to the eternal family of God, to full maturity of faith; because that's what the servant of God was called for- to be steward of the Lord's flock & of the Gospel. The under- shepherd of Christ or the pastor however, cannot force anyone to grow in faith & pursue maturity. It is the duty & responsibility of everyone who claim to be a Christian to submit himself to the training & discipline, first of the Holy Spirit & secondly, of the servant of God as the Lord's instrument. "Everyone who claims to have faith will prove the truth in his action." That's why the Book of James said, "Faith without action is dead."
*Here is an important reminder: Developing maturity in every Christian takes hard work or wearisome toil (physically & emotionally) especially in the part of the under-shepherd (the pastor) - V. 29, 2: 1, 1 Cor. 15: 58. Hard work actually involves the entire life of a God's servant beyond the understanding of ordinary Christian.
*(3.) True believers are Commanded to live their lives in Christ Jesus- 2: 6 -7.
*(a.) Those who have truly received a new life in Christ are expected to have found a new beginning of life in Christ. It is expected that they no longer live according to the ways of this world but according to the principles of life being taught by the Word of God and a life that is worthy of all the descriptions & attributes of the exalted Christ as mentioned in 1: 15 - 20. So the Christian life is lived by bringing glory to the Lord Jesus Christ.
*(b.) Those who found a new way of living were reconciled to God through the Lord Jesus Christ, & firmly rooted in Him & established in their faith- 2: 6 - 8 / 1: 21-22.
*(c.) Having been established in their faith in Christ Jesus, the Christians are being warned against false teachings & deceptive philosophy, against human traditions & worldly principles - 2: 8. If this was the problem during the time of writing of this letter, This is likewise the common problem in today's society wherein people are captivated by human philosophy, by human teachings which in most cases are blended with human traditions intended to divert the focus of men from the Lord Jesus Christ turning to the deceptive teachings inspired by the devil.
*(4.) The fullness of the Deity lives in Christ, & genuine Christians have been given fullness of life in Christ- 2: 9 - 10. If we truly belong to Christ therefore, it's amazing to know that we partake of the Divine nature through Christ - 2 Pet. 1:4. We have received the fullness of His grace - Jn. 1: 16. *May we just clarify that even if we are true believers, we do not become God, but we simply share in the goodness of His nature.
*(a.) Christians, paticularly we the Gentile Christians, have received spiritual circumcision from Christ (not by man)- 2: 11- 12. It was actually the circumcision of the heart - Ro.2: 29. Our sinful nature - the body of the flesh or the mind of the flesh (2:18) was put off by Christ's death & resurrection. That's why a true believer in Christ is a New Creation (2 Cor. 5: 17). The puting off of the "old life" occurs at the moment of salvation when a believer is burried with Christ in baptism by the Spirit & is raised with Him to a new life - Ro. 6: 3 - 8. (In water baptism, immersion portrays burial with Christ, & coming out of the water depicts the resurrection by the power of God to live a new life).
*(b.) Those who have received a new life in Christ have been set free from the legalistic demands of the Law - 2: 13- 23. A new life came when God forgave us all our sins for He canceled the "written Code" or "written Law" wherein people stood condemned - (Ro. 3:19). In Christ however, the Law is fulfilled & done away with - Ro. 8: 2 Heb. 7: 12. This actully shows like Jesus have canceled all the criminal charges imputed in us, as if he was nailing it to the cross with Him.
*We are unable to pay our debts but He paid it all at the cross with His Blood & very life. By fulfilling the demands of the Law, Christ disarmed all demonic powers & authorities that inspired & instigated legalistic rules that intended to control the lives of the believers in Christ.
*Therefore, genuine believers & followers of the Lord Jesus Christ have been set free from all the requirements of the Law & from all the religious traditions of men - 2: 16- 18.
*Pertaining to this freedom, please read Ro. 4: 1- 4, 1 Tim. 4: 1 - 3, Gal. 4: 8 -11. Influenced by the Judaizers, the Galatians Christians again observed Mosaic calendar. They observed special days ( weekly Sabbath's) & months & seasons (seasonal festivals such as Passover, Pentecost & Tabernacles) & years such as sabbatical & Jubilee years). Doing these works would not gain them additional merit to God. Paul made it clear that works could not be added to faith as reason for either justification or sanctification. In fact, participating in any kind of religious festival is not only useless 8n the eyes of God but also a proof of true faith in the Risen Lord.
Verse 22 - 23 specifically pointed out that all human regulations & religious requirements have no more power or no value at all in the lives of genuine believers & followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, or else His death on the cross for our sins could have been of no use - Gal. 2: 21.
*In Him we have total freedom & we have been set free from the requirements of the Law & now living under His Amazing Grace which enables us to live a life that brings glory & honor to God through a life that is united with the Lord Jesus Christ.
*(5.) Those who have new life in Christ set their hearts on the things of the eternal - 3: 1- 2. Since true believers have not only died in Christ but have also been raised with Christ - Col. 2: 12 - 13, Ro. 6: 8 - 10, they should set their hearts & minds on the concerns of the kingdom of God wherein they will spend their eternity. Their lives should be fully occupied by heavenly perspectives & no longer on the things in this material world.
*The word "set" means to seek or strive for eanestly (Ituon ng buong sigasig). While it is true that Christians are still in this material world where everyone is fightng for his place under the sun not only for his survival but also to have a share of the things that this material world keeps offering.
*True Christians however, have supposedly given up their rights to partake of temporary benefits of this temporary life because they are supposed to have died in their old sinful life & their life is hidden with Christ in God (secured & safe in Christ). Christ now is their very life - 3: 3, Gal. 2: 20.
*Furthermore, they (or we) have already changed our permanent & eternal dwelling which is the eternal kingdom of God . We became citizens of heaven from the time that we have received a new life in Christ - Phil. 3:20. Christians fixing their attention toward the "things above" involves focusing our lives on the ascended glorified Christ.
*When the Lord Jesus Christ will appear at the "Rapture," those who truly belong to Him will appear with Him & will be glorified - 3: 4. *Our most awaited moment will come at the wink of an eye, & we will be like Him - 1 Jn. 3: 2, 1 Cor. 15: 51-53,
Phil: 3: 20- 21. That glorious moment, which will be the greatest & most glorious moments for those who have truly entrusted their life to our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ is beyond description & beyond human imagination; & it will happen sooner that we could ever think of. So get right with God before it's too late.
