The Fragrance of True Worship

Matthew 26:6-13

How human logic clashes with divine love, and how an act of extravagant worship echoes into eternity?

I. A Costly Presentation of Worship

II. A Criticizing Perception of Waste

III. A Commending Protection of Worth

If we are honest with ourselves; we live in a world that is obsessed with efficiency, utility, and return on investment.

Before we spend our time, our energy, or our money, we ask ourselves: “Is it worth it? What am I getting out of this? Is this a smart use of my resources?” We calculate, we measure, and we optimize.

But true love does not calculate. True love does not operate on a spreadsheet. Love, by its very nature, is lavish. It gives without keeping score. And when it comes to our relationship with Jesus Christ, true devotion often looks incredibly foolish to a world—and sometimes even a church—obsessed with utility.

True worship always costs us something. It gives our most valuable treasures to Christ. Mary did not look at her flask and think, “Let me give Jesus the leftovers.” She gave Him the absolute best she had. When we look at our own lives—our time, our talents, our resources, our hearts—do we offer Jesus our leftovers, or do we bring Him our alabaster flasks?
