My stepdaughter took a DNA test just for fun—but the results changed everything I believed I knew.
As I was 17, I had a baby. A girl. My parents forced me to give her up and leave her at the hospital.
They threatened me, and I felt I had no choice.
I still REGRET that decision. I haven’t been in contact with my parents since.
Back then, though, I honestly believed she would have a better life with an adoptive family than growing up in poverty with me.
Years passed. I got back on my feet.
Recently, I married Chris, a wonderful man who had an adopted daughter named Susan.
He and his ex-wife adopted Susan when she was little. Her biological mother left her at the hospital right after she was born.
Susan and I connected right away. She was the same age my biological daughter would have been.
Because our stories were so similar, I wanted to give her as much love as I could.
A week ago, Susan brought home a DNA test kit from school and asked us to take the test with her.
""I know we’re not related. But who knows, maybe this will help me find my real parents?"" she laughed.
When the results arrived, Susan came home looking upset.
At dinner, she avoided my eyes and hardly said a word. Then she went to talk to Chris in private.
They talked for a long time, and I could hear Susan crying.
Then Chris came out to me with a strange look on his face, holding the DNA test results.
