"Mahiwaga"

MAHIWAGA!

"Divine Embrace: God’s Acceptance, God’s Merciful and God’s Love"

(Mark 1:40-45)

By Cris Jhon N. Pascua, AB-Philosophy

“A l***r came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” In the Gospel, we witness a moving scene in which a l***r approaches Jesus, kneeling and imploring. This scenario captures the depths of human fragility and despair. Jesus, moved by compassion, not only accepts the l***r as he is, but also extends his healing touch, saying, "I do. Be made clean." Through my reflection, I've come to embrace the deep fact that God accepts me just as I am, which is a source of enormous peace and solace. Reflecting on the kindness experiences that God given me, I've understood that God accepts us for who we are, shows us mercy, and loves us.

Firstly, “God accepts us for who we are”. Looking at the sight of the l***r approaching Jesus, I also have weaknesses in life where I felt unworthy. Similar to how Jesus didn't turn away the sick person, I felt God's kindness despite my mistakes and unworthiness. During these moments of openness about my weaknesses, God embraces me and assures me that I am accepted just the way I am.

Secondly, “God gives us mercy”. As I ponder on the charity shown to the l***r, I am reminded of the mercy that has touched my own life. Jesus, moved by compassion, stretched out to heal the l***r, serving as a striking reminder that God's mercy is freely given rather than earned. In my times of weakness and brokenness, God did not abandon me. Instead, He helps me stand up and says to me, "Do not be afraid, I am with you."

And lastly, “God loves us”. The healing touch of Jesus goes beyond because it is a manifestation of divine love. In the story, I see the profound reality that God's love is beyond what we know. Jesus shows His unconditional love through healing, and I am reminded that I am truly loved by a compassionate and loving God. The love of God for me has become the inspiration for me to love Him throughout my entire life.

Indeed, in the quiet moments of reflection, I am blessed and grateful for God's acceptance, mercy, and love for me. The meeting between Jesus and the l***r exemplifies the infinite compassion that drives my spiritual journey. As I confront life's challenges, I find comfort in knowing that I am surrounded by a caring and loving God, who gives me strength and peace whenever I feel like giving up in life.

"A Faithful Journey: Discovering the Power of Prayer, Trusting the Lord, and Surrendering to God" (Mark 1:29-39)

By Cris Jhon N. Pascua

“He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him.” Our Gospel today is about Jesus curing people and preaching the Good News to them. The crowds follow him wherever he goes because his words bring healing and freedom to them. The miraculous healing of Jesus Christ among those who are sick demonstrates his omnipotent nature—He is powerful and able to do all things that are possible. With these experiences, it invites me to reflect on the power of prayer, trusting the Lord, and surrendering to God.

Firstly, “The Power of Prayer”. I have witnessed the life-changing power of prayer, wherein I feel the presence of God through prayer, a guiding force that gives me comfort, strength, and a sense of direction, in times of hardships. Prayer is very powerful weapon to communicate to God my hopes, fears, and gratitude. It is a reminder for me that I am not alone on this journey, no matter what happen, wherever I go, whatever circumstances in my life, by the power of prayer I know that God is always at my side.

Secondly, “Trusting the Lord”. Trusting in the Lord requires a surrendering of doubts and fears, a conscious choice to place my faith in a wisdom beyond my own. It is humbly letting go and allowing a divine plan to unfold, a practice that continually teaches me the beauty of patience and reliance on the better plan of God.

And lastly, “Surrender to God”. It entails accepting that my plans may not always coincide with God's plan. It is a humbling experience that allows me to accept the path with an open heart, knowing that even in the face of hardship, there is a purpose that God wanted me to discover. Surrendering to God is a faithful journey, an everyday reminder to let go of my ego and place my trust in a loving, guiding power who offer a path of grace and purpose.

Indeed, "The Power of Prayer," "Trusting the Lord," and "Surrender to God" depict a profound spiritual journey of mine. These experiences highlight the profound role of faith in providing comfort, guidance, and purpose despite of circumstances in my life through the observed life-changing impact of prayer, the recognition of my personal limitations that leads me to trust in God, and surrendering my life to the will of God.

"Miracles Unveiled: My Journey through Faith, Vocation, and Acts of Charity" (Mark 1:21-28)

By Cris Jhon N. Pascua

“The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him….He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him." Our Gospel for today shows a miracle performed by Jesus Christ, where He expelled an evil spirit from a possessed person through His authority as the Son of God. As we can see in the scripture, Jesus performed various miracles, such as healing those with illnesses like l***rs, crippled, and deaf, performing the miracle of breaking bread to feed thousands people, turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana, and many more miracles, all aimed at revealing to people that He is the Messiah. Upon reflecting on these miracles that Jesus did during His time, I also want to ask myself, what miracles in my life can I say have been performed by God? I realized that God performed miracles in my life through the Miracle of Faith, the Miracle of Vocation and the Miracle of Acts of Charity.
Firstly, the "Miracle of Faith." I remember a time when I didn't really care about my faith, but God Himself made me realize that I should get to know Him and welcome Him into my life. God showed Himself to me by giving me life challenges that led me to know Him better and deepen my faith in Him. Secondly, the "Miracle of Vocation." They say, "Many are called, but few are chosen." When I entered the seminary, I always wondered why, out of so many people in the world, I was chosen. I felt sinful and weak, easily giving in to temptations. But I think God called me to help me realize and change things in my life towards holiness. Now, I'm not in the seminary anymore, but I still keep my heart open to this vocation because I believe God has a better plan for me. Lastly, the "Miracle of Acts of Charity." Many ask me why I love helping others when I don't gain much from it, and sometimes I even lose. But I always tell myself that I can't explain why I have this strong desire to help others throughout my life. Maybe this is what God wants me to do, and perhaps this is my gift from God, a miracle of Acts of Charity.

In conclusion, as I reflect on the miracles performed by Jesus in His time, I am compelled to recognize the miracles that God has wrought in my own life. Through the Miracle of Faith, Vocation, and Acts of Charity, I have witnessed God's transformative presence, guiding me to deepen my faith, discern my vocation, and embrace a fulfilling life through selfless acts of charity. These miracles serve as a testament to God's continuous intervention and purpose in my journey.

"Childlike Faith: Embracing Innocence, Listening with Open Hearts, and Walking Humbly on the Path to God” (Mark 10:13-16)

By Cris Jhon N. Pascua

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Upon reflecting on the Gospel, a sudden thought crossed my mind about why Jesus loves children so much. As we have seen in different passages in the Scripture, we can witness Jesus's intimate love for children. Eventually, I asked myself, what do children possess in their character that I should emulate to draw closer to God, just like children? I realized that I should adopt certain aspects of a child's behavior, and these include being innocence, willingness to listen, and humility.

Firstly, "embracing innocence". Children are still innocent in the world they inhabit, they do not yet know what is good or bad. Therefore, they are wise enough to ask the older ones about what should be done and what should not. Like an innocent child, I should also have this trait to approach God and gain understanding of what I should and should not do, so I can avoid sins and remain faithful to my vocation.

Secondly, “listening with open hearts”. Children are knowledgeable and willing to listen to what the older ones say because they know what is best for them. A child is adept at listening because they acknowledge that they do not know everything in the world. Like a child willing to listen, I also hope to learn to listen to the elders or priests and heed their advice for me. This way, it can serve as a guide on my journey of faith towards God.

And lastly, “humility”. When children make mistakes, they know how to accept that they have sinned. They acknowledge that they are not perfect and need the guidance of the elders to correct their mistakes because they are humble enough. Like a humble child, I should also learn to accept my mistakes because I, too, make mistakes in life. This way, I can have the humility to repent for my sins, correct them, and turn back to God.

In conclusion, to deepen my relationship with God, I should embrace childlike innocence, seek wisdom for moral guidance from God, and remain faithful to my vocation. I also value listening, learning from elders and priests, and practicing humility by acknowledging mistakes and staying open to guidance for spiritual growth.

JULY 9: A WOMANIZING PRIEST WHO IS A SAINT
Saint Andries Wouters
Priest and Martyr
Died: 1572
---
He was a Dutch priest and martyr. He was not a model priest. He was a drunkard and a womanizer. Yes! While a priest, he had several affairs with women and fathered several children despite his vow of celibacy. He was suspended for his scandalous behavior. But when the Calvinists caught him and forced him to renounce his faith in the Eucharist and loyalty to the Pope, he said, “Fornicator I always was; heretic never.” He was hanged.
