Societas Mariae The Society of Mary is an international congregation of priests and brothers. They bear Mary's name and endeavour to live her spirit

The Society of Mary, the Marists, is an international religious congregation of priests and brothers. The word “Marist” is derived from the name “Mary”, the mother of Jesus. Marists are those who bear her name, endeavour to live her spirit, and minister in the Church and the world under the name of Mary. "The Society, like the Church, finds its model in Mary the woman of faith. Its spirituality is

simple and modest in its expression, close to the lives of ordinary people, apostolic in character, and marked by spontaneity and joy. It tries to make its own the Christian experience lived by Mary." – Constitutions SM 117. Spirituality deals with a human person's search for the experience of unity, beauty, goodness and harmony with the transcendent, the mystery that is God. This journey begins when a person realizes that he or she can only find authentic fulfillment and genuine happiness in the experience of the spirit. This call to "wholeness", that takes place at the deepest level of one's being, is also a call to "holiness". Marist spirituality, namely the insights, the images, the memories, the stories, the symbols, and the richness of the Marist way of life, touch deeply this aspect of the human heart's hunger for authentic living. It invites a person into an experience of God's dream and hope for all men and women expressed in the incarnate Son of God, Jesus. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the key to this understanding. Jean Claude Colin, gifted with insight by the Spirit, opened up this treasure for all those who wish to experience it through living the Marist way of life. Characteristics of the Marist spirit include:
• Sharing the faith of Mary that God would like to work wonders through us if only we humbly receive God’s gift
• Carrying out the ministry of evangelization like Mary in a “hidden and unknown” manner, with a listening heart fully engaged in life with others
• Being “an instrument of Divine Mercy” as Mary, welcoming all people
• Being a disciple in the manner of Mary, helping to build and renew the Church
• Praying as Mary did – to intercede for the sake of God’s love for the world, especially for those who are lost or seem far from God
• Living simply, unselfishly, and compassionately like Mary and to stand against the forces of greed, pride, and violence

A Marist Family gathering took place in the North of Italy gathering representatives of the Marist Family in Italy, including Laity. There were five short talks about how living in today’s world as Marists. Discussions and questions followed and in the afternoon there was a symbolic activity of 'building a Marist house' and looking at furnishing it. Fun in the evening! the Church in Cameroon welcomed Pope Leo XIV on his recent apostolic visit with joy and prayer. Confreres of the African District took part in the activities and Eucharistic celebrations organised for the occasion. The Pope’s message focused on peace, especially the peace that Christ gives us and shares with each of us, which calms the storms of life. This was an invitation to each one of us to continue promoting peace and to put an end to conflicts. Reiterating his closeness to the local Church in Cameroon, the Pope expressed his joy saying, “the Cameroonian Church is alive, young, rich in gifts and enthusiasm, vibrant in its diversity and marvelous in its harmony”.

Bishop Joel Konzen, SM, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, blessed the Marist Chapel of Saint Peter Chanel at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The newly renovated adoration chapel honors the Fathers and Brothers of the Society of Mary for building Sacred Heart Church and serving there for nearly 70 years, from 1897 until 1965. The decoration of the Marist Chapel pays homage to the Society’s history with a portrait of St. Peter Chanel, stained glass featuring the coats of arms of both Bishop Joel Konzen and Bishop John Gunn, SM, and prayer kneelers that date from the earliest years of the church. The Marist Chapel is completed with a painting of Sr Teresa of Calcutta, in remembrance of her visiting and praying in the basilica in 1995.

In March "Les journées maristes" were celebrated in our Marist schools north of Paris: Bury and Le Rosaire. After Easter similar days took place in the three Marist schools in Toulon: Cours Fénelon, Institution Sainte Marie, and Externat Saint Joseph la Cordeille. An enthusiastic team with members of the Marist Family gave testimony to hundreds of children and teenagers about their vocation and the Marist mission around the world. Reactions were very positive: the speakers were encouraged by the attentive listening and openness, and many students and teachers were moved by the testimonies about Marist life in different realities of today’s world, in the footsteps of Fr Colin. The members of the team were Frs Jimmy McElroy, Rafael Ramila, Constant Amoussouga, Christian Abongbung and Mika Tuilau, two Marist Missionary Sisters, Angela and Hélène, and Sr Teri O’Brien sm.
