The Society of Mary, the Marists, is an international religious congregation of priests and brothers. The word “Marist” is derived from the name “Mary”, the mother of Jesus. Marists are those who bear her name, endeavour to live her spirit, and minister in the Church and the world under the name of Mary. "The Society, like the Church, finds its model in Mary the woman of faith. Its spirituality is

simple and modest in its expression, close to the lives of ordinary people, apostolic in character, and marked by spontaneity and joy. It tries to make its own the Christian experience lived by Mary." – Constitutions SM 117. Spirituality deals with a human person's search for the experience of unity, beauty, goodness and harmony with the transcendent, the mystery that is God. This journey begins when a person realizes that he or she can only find authentic fulfillment and genuine happiness in the experience of the spirit. This call to "wholeness", that takes place at the deepest level of one's being, is also a call to "holiness". Marist spirituality, namely the insights, the images, the memories, the stories, the symbols, and the richness of the Marist way of life, touch deeply this aspect of the human heart's hunger for authentic living. It invites a person into an experience of God's dream and hope for all men and women expressed in the incarnate Son of God, Jesus. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the key to this understanding. Jean Claude Colin, gifted with insight by the Spirit, opened up this treasure for all those who wish to experience it through living the Marist way of life. Characteristics of the Marist spirit include:
• Sharing the faith of Mary that God would like to work wonders through us if only we humbly receive God’s gift
• Carrying out the ministry of evangelization like Mary in a “hidden and unknown” manner, with a listening heart fully engaged in life with others
• Being “an instrument of Divine Mercy” as Mary, welcoming all people
• Being a disciple in the manner of Mary, helping to build and renew the Church
• Praying as Mary did – to intercede for the sake of God’s love for the world, especially for those who are lost or seem far from God
• Living simply, unselfishly, and compassionately like Mary and to stand against the forces of greed, pride, and violence

Today Marists around the world join in the Prayer for the Care of Creation, opening the Season of Creation which will conclude on the Feast of St Francis.
In his message, Pope Leo said "what is broken around is also broken within us. In order to build a peaceful society, therefore, we must not only reform structures but also renew our hearts. (...) Let us imagine a world in which the energies currently invested in war are directed toward integral human development, to overcoming poverty, protecting human dignity and reconciling divided peoples. Such a vision reflects faith in the coming of God’s Kingdom."

Our Marist School in Atlanta started the new school year in a festive way to mark its 125 anniversary!

A historic school year has begun! During the 2026–2027 academic year, Marist School will celebrate 125 years of Catholic education in Atlanta. We marked the beginning of this milestone together at Schola Brevis on Friday. The entire school community gathered in Hughes Spalding Stadium, where students, faculty, and staff formed a giant “125” to commemorate this defining moment in Marist history. Since 1901, generations of students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, and Marist priests have shaped and strengthened our school. Much has changed during those 125 years. Our Marist mission has remained constant. Throughout this anniversary year, we will honor our spiritual and educational legacy, celebrate the strength of our mission today, and look with confidence toward Marist’s future. From 14 to 17 August the diocese of Bougainville celebrated 125 years of Catholic Missionary presence. The celebrations were attended by a big crowd of faithful, and in his keynote address, Cardinal Tagle paid tribute to the Marist missionaries and to the (great-) grandparents who passed the faith from one generation to another.
On 7 August 1901, Marist Fathers Peter Meyer sm, Eugene Englert sm and some Samoan Catechists, arrived from the Shortland Islands by sloop at Pokpok and they celebrated the first Catholic Mass on the island’s beachfront that same day. Soon, they expanded their mission southward, and arrived in Patupatuai, Buin in 1903. This Marist mission led to the development of the local Church through the years.

A Marist Family gathering took place in the North of Italy gathering representatives of the Marist Family in Italy, including Laity. There were five short talks about how living in today’s world as Marists. Discussions and questions followed and in the afternoon there was a symbolic activity of 'building a Marist house' and looking at furnishing it. Fun in the evening! Sunday morning was dedicated to developing some concrete ideas to foster unity and collaboration in the future. Participants were struck by the unity of spirit along with a healthy diversity, and the gathering took place in an atmosphere of great joy and fraternity.
