"Flame-grilled burger" took on a whole new meaning on Sunday, when Fr Joseph took control (or lost control) of the VEC BBQ. In the end, we had a wonderful lunch, with dolce provided by the Fathers of the Oratory at Chiesa Nuova.

We were glad to welcome Canon Marcus Holden from The Pontifical Beda College last week, together with some Beda seminarians. They were here to celebrate Mass in the Martyrs' Chapel, which was their main chapel for a number of years in the early days, when they resided as an independent seminary here at the VEC.

We were very pleased to welcome members of the Roman Association (our alumni network) to the College last week, the day after they had been to Castel Gandolfo to see Pope Leo. Guests included former rector Mgr Adrian Toffolo (standing on the right in the lower photo). We are very grateful for their friendship and support.

Intrepid pilgrim Phil McCarthy arrived at the College on Friday, having walked "La via di Francesco". You can see his route here, and the stamps he collected on the way. These visits remind us that we were a house of hospitality for pilgrims from 1362, two centuries before we became a seminary.

The Roman Association - our alumni network - has been meeting at Palazzola this week. They had the privilege of having a private audience with Pope Leo at Castel Gandolfo on Tuesday morning, arranged by Archbishop Paul Gallagher. Pope Leo heard lots about the history and mission of the VEC, and gave a short reflection on the life of St Philip Neri, before meeting each member individually and giving his apostolic blessing.

It was a privilege for us to serve and concelebrate for the Solemnity of St Philip Neri at the Chiesa Nuova on Tuesday. Our links with St Philip go back to when he lived across the road from the College. The vestments worn here are 400 years old and were worn at St Peter's Basilica during the Canonisation of Sts. Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Ávila, Isidore the Farmer, and Philip Neri.

There are five seminaries serving the Catholic Church in England and Wales. The rectors meet every few months to strategise and swap stories. Here they are last week in St Mary's College, Oscott, arguing over who has the most beautiful chapel.

We celebrated Nordic Night recently, with saints, swords, Viking helmets and... rice pudding! Which apparently is a Norwegian delicacy.
