A private conversation filled with words and gifts, but above all prayer, in the setting of the Urban VIII Chapel. This was the Pope's audience this morning with Sarah Mullally, Archbishop of Canterbury, received with her entourage in the Vatican. From "Canterbury to Rome," in the footsteps of her predecessors, Mullally said in her greeting. She cited the ecumenical journey undertaken thus far, reiterating the importance of doing so together "as a community of Christians seeking the unity for which Christ prayed" and of deepening the dimension of hospitality.
The Pope also referred to the meeting sixty years ago between Saint Paul VI and Archbishop Michael Ramsey in his address, reiterating the importance for Christians of unity and of becoming "messengers of peace," overcoming the "stumbling blocks" that have arisen in recent decades.
"It would be a scandal," he emphasized, quoting Francis, "if we did not continue to work to overcome our differences, however insurmountable they may seem."
"I will remain united with you in prayer: for peace in the world, for justice, and that every person may discover the fullness of life that God offers." This was the archbishop's greeting and promise.
