After a morning of Italian classes and an afternoon conference, the whole community gathered yesterday for Mass and a welcome reception in the Red Room followed by dinner served by the 2nd year men. The new man class left this morning for a fraternity weekend in Assisi. When they return on Sunday evening to continue with orientation, they'll find the entire 2nd year class back at the seminary!

This week of orientation is focused on Italian classes and conferences to learn about the four pillars of priestly formation: human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral. Today also included a practice for the upcoming softball tournament and a choir rehearsal to prepare for the diaconate ordination at the end of September.

Several orientation traditions took place today, including this year's new tradition of a daily afternoon downpour! The day started at the seminary with Mass, conferences on safety and spiritual direction, and a tour of the Immaculate Conception Chapel followed by praying the Rosary and the blessing and distribution of the images of Our Lady of Humility. Then we boarded the busses to Castel Gandolfo for a wonderful lunch and tour of the papal palace with His Eminence James Cardinal Harvey '76.

It began with Mass at the tomb of St. Peter followed by a tour of the Basilica and individual introductions back at the seminary. After lunch, everyone took the Italian placement exam and the day ended with a delicious dinner on the rooftop terrace cooked by the second year men.

Today the seminarians visited the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme as well as the Cathedral Basilica of St. John Lateran. The former contains many relics of the passion of Our Lord and the latter is the cathedral of Rome and seat of the Holy Father. In the baptistry of St. John Lateran we renewed our baptismal promises and celebrated the Holy Mass.

Today our New Men had the opportunity to visit and celebrate the Holy Mass in the catacombs of St. Callixtus, one of the oldest Christian burial sights in the world where the remains of many popes and martyrs were laid to rest during the first centuries of the Church.
