These words speak of a missionary heart, one that does not wait for someone else to act when there is a need.

To go is to step beyond comfort, fear and uncertainty because someone needs hope, healing and love.

Mission is not always about going far. Sometimes it means taking the first step towards reconciliation, serving where there is need, speaking truth with love, or simply being present for someone who is hurting.

When everyone waits, who will go?

May we have the courage of Abbot Francis to say:
“If no one goes, I will go.”

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle urged young Catholics to reject gossip and embrace authentic friendship, warning that rumors, lies, and hurtful conversations quietly destroy trust and relationships.

Speaking before young people during the 12th Philippine Conference on New Evangelization at the University of Santo Tomas on Sunday, Tagle said many people mistakenly equate gossip with genuine friendship.

“If you receive gossip, bias, lies, violent and destructive content, the one who sent you that is not a friend,” said Tagle, pro-prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization.

He cautioned that people who habitually speak negatively about others will eventually do the same to those closest to them, encouraging the youth to recognize such behavior before it damages their own friendships.

According to the cardinal, gossip erodes trust, while sincere and consistent love has the power to restore it. He added that people who feel genuinely accepted are more likely to become faithful and trustworthy friends.

Tagle rooted his reflection in the Gospel of John, where Jesus calls His disciples friends because He shares with them the truths He received from the Father rather than idle or harmful talk.

“I have called you friends,” Tagle said, quoting Scripture. “Friendship is sharing the holy things that we have experienced from God.”

He emphasized that true friendship calls for compassion and patience toward those who are struggling instead of judgment, ridicule, or exclusion.

Recalling a conversation during a global synod, Tagle shared the testimony of a young woman who expressed that some young people feel they are not worthy of the Church because its leaders are often perceived as harsh and unwelcoming.

“Some of us young people feel we are not good enough for the Church,” Tagle recalled her saying, adding that her words deeply moved him.

The cardinal stressed that young people need friends, mentors, and pastors who welcome them with love rather than push them away through gossip, shame, or rejection.

“The person who gives you a lot of headache is the person that you should love the most,” Tagle told the gathering.

He concluded by encouraging the youth to choose friendships built on truth, loyalty, and charity, reminding them that genuine friends strengthen one another through love rather than tear others down through gossip.

Happy Mother's Day!

When God Created Mothers

When the Good Lord was creating mothers, He was into His sixth day of "overtime" when the angel appeared and said: "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."
And God said, "Have you read the specs on this order?" She has to be completely washable, but not plastic. Have 180 moveable parts...all replaceable. Run on black coffee and leftovers. Have a lap that disappears when she stands up. A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair. And six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said: "Six pairs of hands.... no way."
It's not the hands that are causing me problems," God remarked, "it's the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have."
That's on the standard model?" asked the angel. God nodded.
One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, 'What are you kids doing in there?' when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn't but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say. 'I understand and I love you' without so much as uttering a word."
God," said the angel touching his sleeve gently, "Get some rest tomorrow...."
I can't," said God, "I'm so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick...can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger...and can get a nine year old to stand under a shower."
The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. "It's too soft," she sighed.
But tough!" said God excitedly. "You can imagine what this mother can do or endure."
Can it think?"
Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise," said the Creator.
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek.
There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told You that You were trying to put too much into this model."
It's not a leak," said the Lord, "It's a tear."
What's it for?"
It's for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride."
You are a genius, " said the angel.
Somberly, God said, "I didn't put it there.”
