In Costa Rica, sisters and partners-in-mission are strengthening the way migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers are accompanied โ€” from the Good Shepherd's ๐—›๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐— ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฎ in San Josรฉ to our presence in ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ผ ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐˜€ on the southern border.

Recent national gatherings on human mobility brought together nearly 40 pastoral workers to strengthen coordination across Costa Rica. One result was the creation of the ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—›๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†, in which Sr. Gilma Muรฑoz participates alongside other religious and lay people.

The mission also connects direct accompaniment with advocacy. Earthquakes, fires, floods, and other disasters are leaving a trail of horrific loss and trauma across our world. The recent catastrophe along the Nepalโ€“Tibet border has brought unimaginable suffering. The cry of creation is before our eyes and in the lives of our sisters and brothers - grieving and hopeless. Our hearts go out to those whose lives have been devastated. ๐Ÿ’”

At Maison Rose Virginie in Roubaix, France, women and children experiencing violence, poverty, and family instability find more than a place to stay. They share daily life with sisters, professionals, partners-in-mission, and volunteers who offer ๐˜๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ, ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด, ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜ as families work toward greater stability. ๐Ÿ 

Communal living can require adjustment, but residents describe how shared routines, conversations, celebrations, and everyday encounters help break isolation and rebuild trust.

Volunteers also contribute through outings, activities with children, practical help, and support when families move into permanent housing.

On August 26, a devastating flash flood struck ๐๐ž๐ฉ๐š๐ฅ, claiming hundreds of lives and leaving hundreds of people missing.

According to official figures, 547 people have died, 73 have been injured, and 977 remain missing, while more than 3,200 people have been rescued.

Despite civil unrest, severe flooding, and Cyclone Gezani, ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿณ ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป at the Fihavanana Center in Antananarivo, Madagascar, continued learning and developing skills during the 2025โ€“2026 academic year. ๐Ÿ“š

When classes were interrupted, the Center continued supporting families with food. When students struggled to return, teachers and training staff worked closely with parents to help them re-engage.

For adolescent girls, vocational training became more personalized, allowing them to choose specializations including dressmaking, embroidery and basketry, pastry and cooking, and crochet. Around 50 residents gathered at the courthouse, where the proceedings gave the community further opportunity to have its concerns heard. As the new ๐‘๐ž๐ ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š continues to take shape, the Good Shepherd community in Burkina Faso brings to this shared journey the lived experience of mission โ€” accompanying women in prison, equipping young women for employment, supporting childrenโ€™s development, and forming new members through direct engagement with people experiencing vulnerability.

In Bobo-Dioulasso, sisters and partners-in-mission are creating ๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ก๐ฐ๐š๐ฒ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ๐ฐ๐š๐ซ๐ ๐๐ข๐ ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ข๐ง๐๐ž๐ฉ๐ž๐ง๐๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž through prison accompaniment, vocational training, early childhood education, support for internally displaced women, and other ministries rooted in presence and relationship.

These experiences are also helping to shape the emerging Region of Africa, reminding us that new structures find their meaning when they ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ง ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง and enable us to respond more closely to the realities of peopleโ€™s lives. ๐Ÿ’š
