The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel: A Sign of Protection, Not a Charm
This is a time to rediscover the spiritual gifts associated with the Holy Scapular—a concrete expression of consecration to Mary, rich in promises, yet also calling for commitment.
Spiritual Privileges
Among the privileges linked to the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the promise of protection from eternal damnation. According to tradition, Our Lady gave the scapular to Saint Simon Stock with these words: "Whoever dies wearing this shall not suffer eternal fire." This is understood as a promise of salvation for those who wear it with faith and die in the state of grace.
Another grace is the Sabbatine privilege, through which the Virgin promised to deliver from purgatory, on the first Saturday after death, the souls of those who have devoutly worn the scapular.
Finally, the scapular is a sign of Mary’s maternal protection, covering us with her mantle and especially accompanying us at the hour of death.
Christian Commitments
These privileges are accompanied by concrete commitments. The Christian who wears the scapular embraces the following:
Devout and constant use of the scapular, as a visible sign of consecration to Mary.
Living in the state of grace, with regular confession and perseverance until death.
Observing chastity, according to one’s state in life.
Cultivating Marian piety, through prayer (especially the Rosary), penance, and imitation of Mary’s virtues: humility, obedience, faith, hope, and charity.
A Call to Authentic Devotion
The scapular is not a charm or a magical object. It is a sacramental: a sacred sign that urges us to live our faith with coherence, under the guidance and protection of Mary.
As we approach the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, let us renew our trust in Mary and cultivate an authentic Marian devotion, wearing the scapular with love, fidelity, and Christian commitment.
