Console Onorario Britannico a Venezia

This morning, in Padova's WW2 Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) cemetery in Via della Biscia (https://maps.app.goo.gl/mJfKzzMcoUc1Hqfm9) the traditional ceremony was held with the presence of the Municipality (Comune) of Padova, the associations of war veterans, the local comandante of the Italian air force, representatives from the Questura (Police), and members of the public.
It was the 25th time I have attended the ceremony, which has changed over the years in terms of numbers - from 20 to even 80 attending - and composition. Always a good opportunity to remember the fallen, in this case, from WW2, and to rekindle the friendship between Italy and the UK/Commonwealth countries. It's also an occasion to remember the fallen - both military and civilian - of all nationalities, beliefs and races from all wars, and the devastating effects war always has on humanity and our fragile planet. Sincerest thanks to all those who attended.

il 16 di agosto, arriva l'invito dal Sindaco di Roana Elisabetta Magnabosco, di far visita presso il Municipio del Comune, a Canove di Roana. Ci eravamo incontrati in occasione della festa nazionale britannica il 30 di giugno a Venezia. Ci fa accoglienza il gentilissimo Cesare Azzolini, consigliere comunale, che dopo un tour del Comune e la sala del Consiglio, ci accompagna al Museo della Prima Guerra in centro del paese di Canove. Il presidente del Museo Vittorio Magnabosco ci illustra i tesori del museo, raccolti da lui e altri appassionati volontari in una vita di passione. Il museo, in precedenza di dimensioni modeste, è stato ampliato in tempi recenti con delle sale ampie, dove ospitano incontri di scolari e altri. Avendo visitato diversi musei storici negli anni, il museo curato di "Vito" e amici ci ha davvero colpito per la completezza: non solo fotografie e tantissimi armi ma documenti testimoni, mappe, plastiche, un carro reperito l'anno scorso di valore storico/culturale inestimabile, e persino una sezione dedicata alla seconda guerra (di cui l'Altopiano di Asiago fu teatro). Una giornata piovosa trasformata in una piena di interesse, di cultura, di simpatia. Alla fine, grazie a Vito, abbiamo potuto incontrare uno dei curatori giardinieri dei 5 cimiteri Commonwealth sull'Altopiano.

Grazie al Sindaco di Caltrano, Luca Sandonà, per l'invito a partecipare alla manifestazione e cerimonia per comemorare la Missione "Ruina Fluvius" il 14 di agosto 2022. E' stata, come sempre, una cerimonia e incontro molto bella e sentita da tutti i partecipanti. Allego qualche documento e fotografia che, spero, sia rappresentativa dello spirito di amicizia e simpatia che lega il Regno Unito e la gente della bellissima zona dell'altopiano di Asiago e Comuni vicini.

Visiting a war cemetery may not be 'fun' but it's worthwhile. It nurtures the bonds between our nations and gives a quiet satisfaction to acknowledge military personnel who gave their lives for their country and the freedom of others, here in Italy, in both world wars. The past meets the present, and, in the present, today's British residents and visitors and Italians remember and honour our shared history and heroes and heroines.

On the brighter topics: this page is about what's interesting in the Veneto and Friuli regions which are somehow related to the UK and which bring us together. So if you're Italian and like playing the bagpipes, .. please don't: it's not good for you or for the ears of those around you. Only joking of course 😉
