29th May marks the feast of Pope St. Paul VI

In an audience with Pope Paul VI, Bishop Sebastião Fernandes of Mysore, India, whose episcopal cathedral in Mysore was named after and dedicated to St. Philomena, asked that very question of the Holy Father. In a 1964 letter sent to the Mugnano Shrine by Bishop Fernandes, he testifies to the response given by the Paul VI:

“What must I do for the people in my diocese who are greatly troubled by the decree of the Sacred Congregation regarding St. Philomena?” Paul VI responded, “Do not let it disturb you and do not disturb your people; let devotion to St. Philomena continue as before” (proseguiva come prima) (30).

25 May 1802 - The Discovery of Saint Philomena
Catacombs of Priscilla, Rome

From the silence of the ancient catacombs, Heaven revealed a hidden saint to the world.

Upon the tomb of the young Virgin Martyr were found the sacred symbols of her victory in Christ: the Anchor of hope, the Lily of purity, the Palm of martyrdom, the Arrows and Scourge of suffering endured for Jesus, and the vial containing her precious martyr’s blood.

Across the broken tomb stones were written the mysterious words:

“Pax Tecum Filumena”
“Peace be with you, Philomena.”

Though forgotten by history, she was remembered by God.

Saint Philomena became the only Virgin Martyr canonised purely through the overwhelming power of her heavenly intercession — through miracles, conversions, healings, and the unmistakable voice of grace flowing through her prayers.

Today we honour not only the discovery of sacred relics, but the revelation of a soul completely united to Christ.

O beloved Saint Philomena, hidden flower of Heaven,
teach us purity in a world of corruption,
courage in suffering,
and unwavering faith in the triumph of God.

May the peace written upon your tomb descend upon every heart that seeks you:
