IS THE BIRTHDAY OF MARY IN THE BIBLE?

Mary’s birth points toward the coming of Jesus Christ, our Savior. In her Magnificat (Luke 1:46–48), Mary humbly rejoices in God and recognizes the great things He has done through her.

Why September 8?
The date comes from ancient Christian tradition and falls nine months after December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.

The Bible does not give exact dates for many important events—including Mary’s birth, Jesus’ birth, Passion, Resurrection, and Baptism. Yet the absence of a date does not lessen their importance. The Church celebrates these mysteries because of what God accomplished through them, not merely because of when they happened.

Mary’s life is inseparable from salvation history. Her fiat—“Let it be done to me according to your word”—opened her heart to God’s plan and prepared the way for the Incarnation.

Today, we celebrate not merely Mary’s birthday, but the woman who became the Mother of our Savior, our Mother, and a model of faithful obedience.

Happy Birthday, Mama Mary! May your “yes” teach us to say “yes” to God every day. 🙏💙

On Sept. 8, the Catholic Church celebrates the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God! This feast day is celebrated exactly nine months after the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on Dec. 8. Be sure to honor Our Lady and wish her a Happy Birthday as we look to her as our Spiritual Mother!
