The east end window of King’s College Chapel is a beautiful reminder that Tudor England was already looking towards the Renaissance. While the chapel itself is the height of English Gothic, its final details reveal a new Italian influence shaping royal taste.
We can see this shift beginning with Henry VII’s tomb at Westminster, designed by the Florentine Pietro Torrigiano, bringing classical style into England. Henry VIII continued this fascination, collecting works like the colourful glazed reliefs of the della Robbia family, inspired by Florence.
At King’s, this interest shows in the Italianate quire and especially in the east window. The biblical scenes are framed with architecture that feels distinctly Florentine; arches, perspective, and a clearer sense of space replacing medieval patterning.
It’s a moment where Gothic and Renaissance meet: a chapel begun in the Middle Ages, but finished in a world increasingly inspired by Italy.
