A powerful Magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck offshore near Maasim, Sarangani, in the SOCCSKSARGEN region of Mindanao. The earthquake occurred at 7:37 AM local time, causing severe shaking across southern Mindanao and triggering immediate localized tsunami surges. It is being cited as one of the most destructive seismic events to hit the country in decades.

Here is the breakdown of the latest official outcomes and situation reports compiled by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and PHIVOLCS: Casualties and Displacement The impact has unfortunately led to severe casualties across several provinces: Deaths: At least 45 fatalities have been reported and are currently being verified by the OCD. The highest concentrations are in Sarangani (18 deaths) and South Cotabato (15 deaths). Injuries: Over 630 individuals have sustained injuries, many due to falling debris, collapsing structures, or panic during the morning rush.

Missing: At least 17 people remain missing, with search and rescue operations actively centered in Davao Occidental and General Santos City. Affected Population: More than 149,000 individuals (around 33,596 families) across SOCCSKSARGEN, the Davao Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, and BARMM have been impacted. Over 32,000 displaced residents are currently taking shelter inside 57 designated evacuation centers. Infrastructure and Property Damage A State of Calamity has been officially declared for General Santos City, which bore the heaviest brunt of commercial and structural degradation. Major highway routes, specifically the stretch connecting T'Boli to General Santos, faced partial closures due to localized landslides and road fissures. Tsunami and Aftershock DataThe seismic activity originated from subduction along the highly active Cotabato Trench.

Tsunami Wave Height: Initial coastal tsunami warnings prompted thousands of families to flee inland.
