Founded in 1442 by Antoninus (1389-1459), Archbishop of Florence and aided by the munificence of Cosimo ‘Il Vecchio’ de’ Medici, the Buonomini sought relief for those who had fallen upon hard times and were considered too honourable to beg for themselves. The oratory’s fresco decoration consists of a cycle of ten painted lunettes depicting two scenes from the life of Saint Martin, the remainder i

llustrating acts based on the seven corporal works of mercy. The depictions appear barely to have been mentioned in art historical circles, let alone analysed to any degree, despite the cursory acknowledgement of scholars since the nineteenth century. This is not to say that the painted decorations attributed to the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449-94) are unimportant, simply that the little Florentine church has only been recently opened to the public.
