Chosen by God in Christ
Definition and basis
God’s people are “elect” in Christ, not by merit but by His sovereign grace. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son (Romans 8:29). Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus (Romans 3:24). The word “chosen” signifies God’s loving decision to save some sinners through faith in Jesus.
The means of being chosen
Eternally chosen, yet it is realized by faith in the gospel. As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name (John 1:12). For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8-9). Faith, repentance, and union with Christ are the instruments of salvation, not human boasting.
Assurance and bearing fruit
True choosing yields a new life and holy obedience. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. (1 John 3:24). Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them (Matthew 7:20). The redeemed persevere in faith because God preserves them.
