The Salt Lake Temple is perhaps the most secret Church in the world, as it’s not open to the public.
But today, I’m going to show you what happens in temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because for the first time, the Church has built a visitors’ center that recreates rooms of a Latter-day Saint temple.
This is an instruction room, where Latter-day Saints experience the endowment ordinance, an elaborate ceremony that tells the story of God’s cosmic plan for his children.
Throughout the ceremony, Latter-day Saints make solemn promises with God to live moral lives. They wear white ceremonial clothing symbolic of holiness and equality. They pray to God surrounding this altar.
But all of this is leading towards the culminating moment at the end of the ceremony, when participants enter into God’s symbolic presence.
This is done by passing through the temple veil at the front of the room into the Celestial Room, a heaven-like room where participants can take time to ponder and feel close to God.
This room is where sealing ordinances are performed. Here, couples can be married and families can be sealed for time and all eternity.
This is the crowning ordinance of the temple because it creates a heaven of infinite loving relationships.
This is the baptistry, where Latter-day Saints are baptized on behalf of those who have already died.
They are immersed in water for deceased person who maybe never heard of Jesus or were born before Christianity, so that all of God’s children have a chance to accept salvation.
The temple is all about forging a strong, loving relationship with God. It’s a place of a lot of people find peace, hope, and purpose.
Come to Temple Square in Salt Lake City, UT to see this recreation of a Latter-day Saint temple for yourself when it opens to the public on May 18, 2026.
