Below is list of actions attributed to ibn Abi that are criticized by historians and scholars themselves (including sources respected by Salafi/Wahhabi circles), especially where those actions are seen as opposition to the Ahl al-Bayt (A.S.) or contrary to the spirit of the Prophet ﷺ’s teachings.

⚠️ Note: This is presented from a historical and textual perspective, not as abuse. Every point is backed by Sunni classical sources.

1. Instituting Public of Imam Ali (A.S.)

One of the most documented acts.

Sunni Sources:

Sahih Muslim, Book of Virtues of Companions
Mu‘awiya ordered Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas to curse Ali. When Sa‘d refused, Mu‘awiya became displeased.

Al-Bidaya wa al-Nihaya – Ibn Kathir, Vol 8

Ibn Kathir (a pillar of Salafi scholarship) admits:

“Mu‘awiya established the practice of cursing from the pulpits.”

This practice continued for over 60 years until it was stopped by Umar ibn Abdul Aziz.

2. Killing of Hujr ibn ‘Adi (Companion of the Prophet ﷺ)

Hujr ibn ‘Adi was a Sahabi who refused to curse Imam Ali.

Dhahabi (major Salafi authority) writes:

“Mu‘awiya committed four actions; any one of them was enough for destruction…”

3. Breaking the Treaty with Imam (A.S.)

The treaty explicitly stated:

Mu‘awiya would not appoint a successor.

The Shia of Ali would be safe.

Ali would not be insulted.

Mu‘awiya later publicly declared:

4. Poisoning of Imam Hasan (A.S.)

Many Sunni historians record that Mu‘awiya encouraged the poisoning of Imam Hasan so Yazid could become caliph.

Ibn Kathir admits:

5. Appointing Yazid – A Drunkard and Open Sinner

Even major Sunni scholars admit Yazid was corrupt.

Sunni admissions:

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal cursed those who supported Yazid

Dhahabi called Yazid:

“A Nasibi, harsh, drinker, and one who committed munkar acts”

Mu‘awiya forcibly imposed Yazid as ruler, laying the foundation for Karbala.

6. Attempt to Alter Islamic Values into Monarchy

Mu‘awiya turned the Khilafah into kingship.

Sunni Hadith:

“The Caliphate after me will be for thirty years, then it will become kingship.”

Thirty years ended with Imam Hasan (A.S.). Mu‘awiya marks the beginning of monarchy.

7.Enmity toward Ahl al-Bayt (A.S.)

Numerous Sunni scholars acknowledge Mu‘awiya’s hatred of Ali (A.S.).

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal said:

“Mu‘awiya had nothing virtuous when compared to Ali.”

The hadith from (sawas) “ is from me and I am from Ali” (علي مني وأنا من علي) is recorded in several classical hadith collections, not just Shia ones. Here are the main Sunni references with proper grading:

1. al-Tirmidhi
> حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ مُوسَى، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاق، عَنْ حُبْشِيِّ بْنِ جُنَادَةَ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ عَلِيٌّ مِنِّي،‏‏‏‏ وَأَنَا مِنْ عَلِيٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَا يُؤَدِّي عَنِّي إِلَّا أَنَا أَوْ عَلِيٌّ
Narrated Hubshi bin Junadah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Ali is from me and I am from Ali. And none should represent me except myself or Ali.”
graded it: Sahih Gharib. Al- also graded it .

2. Ahmad ibn
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Don’t try to find faults with Ali, he is indeed from me and I am from him, he is your leader after me. He is from me and I am from him, he is your leader after me.”
This is recorded in Musnad Ahmad, vol. 5, p. 356.

3. Kitab al- by Ibn Abi ‘Asim (d. 287 AH)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Ali is from me and I am from him, and he is the wali of every believer after me.”
The annotator Dr. Basim al-Jawabirah says: Its chain is sahih, its narrators are the narrators of Sahih Muslim.

4. Al- al- by al-Hakim al-Naysaburi.
“Truly, Ali is from me and I am from him, and he is the of every believer after me.”
Al-Hakim includes it in Al-Mustadrak.

5. Khasa’is Amir al-Mu’minin Ali by al-Nasa’i
The same hadith is recorded in al-Nasa’i’s Khasa’is Amir al-Mu’minin Ali.

Hadith Al-Muqatalah

Al Nasa'i in Khasa'is, 40, reports this tradition on the authority of Abu Said al Khudri:

Abu Said al Khudri reports: "We sat waiting for the Messenger of Allah (pbuh&hp) when he came out to meet us. The strap of his sandal was broken and he tossed it to Ali. Then he (pbuh&hp) said: "A man amongst you will fight the people over the (interpretation) of the in the same way as I have fought over its (revelation)." Thereupon Abu Bakr said, 'Is that I?' The Prophet (pbuh&hp) said: "No." Then Umar asked him, 'Is that I?' "No." said the Prophet (pbuh&hp). "It is the mender of the sandal (i.e. Ali)."

The Prophet ﷺ said to :
يَا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ، لَيَبْعَثَنَّ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ رَجُلًا مِنْكُمْ قَدِ امْتَحَنَ اللهُ قَلْبَهُ لِلْإِيمَانِ، فَيَضْرِبُكُمْ أَوْ يَضْرِبُ رِقَابَكُمْ
“O ! Allah will certainly send against you a man from among you whose heart Allah has tested for faith, and he will strike you—or strike your necks.”
Abū Bakr asked, “Is it me?” The Prophet ﷺ said “No.”
ʿUmar asked, “Is it me?” He said “No.”
Then he said:
وَلَكِنَّهُ خَاصِفُ النَّعْلِ
“Rather, it is the one repairing the sandal.”
ʿAlī (ع) was at that time repairing the Prophet's sandal.

حدثني محمد بن الحسين الاشناني ، قال : حدثنا أحمد بن حازم قال : حدثنا عاصم بن عامر وعثمان بن أبي شيبة ، قالا : حدثنا جرير عن الأعمش عن عمرو بن مرة عن أبي البختري قال : الما أن جاء عائشة قتل علي ع سجدت .

"When Ayesha was informed of Ali's murder, she (out of happiness)"

2. Shaykh Kamaluddin Damiri also records in his famed work Hayat al Haywan , Volume 1 page 43 :

"When Ayesha was informed about the murder of Ali , she said : “And she threw down her staff and settled upon her place of abode , like the traveller to return home"

Ayesha ل while offering condolence said: 0 Abu Muhammad ! The (grevious) day after the death of your grandfather is the day of martyrdom of your father. After listening to her, Imam Hasan ع said to her: You have forgotten that in the night without lighting the lamp you were digging the floor in your house with an iron piece. Because of darkness you hit your hand with the iron piece. The wound is still present on your hand. You were digging the floor to remove illegitimate money collected by you, which you had buried under the floor, in an old green color cloth bag. You removed 40 dinars, this amount has no value in front of you, from the bag. YOU DISTRIBUTED THESE DINAR AMONG THE PEOPLE OF BANI TAMEEM AND BANI ADI, WHO BORE ENEMITY AGAINST MY FATHER. THIS WAY YOU CELEBRATED AND COOLED YOUR HEART AND NOW YOU ARE OFFERING CONDOLENCE OF MY FATHER.
